And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin the fight against the people of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other,“ Whoever will take the lead in attacking the Ammonites will be head over all who live in Gilead.”

The leaders of Gilead spoke to one another. They said,“ Who will lead the attack against the Ammonites? That person will be the ruler of all the people who live in Gilead.”

And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

The leaders of Gilead said to each other,“ Whoever attacks the Ammonites first will become ruler over all the people of Gilead.”

The rulers of Gilead said to one another,“ Which man will begin the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall become head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

The rulers of Gilead said to one another,“ Which man will lead the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

And the people[ and] princes of Gilead said one to another, What man[ is he] that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

The leaders of Gilead said to one another,“ Who is willing to lead the charge against the Ammonites? He will become the leader of all who live in Gilead!”

The people, the princes of Gilead, said to one another,“ Who is the man who will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord in Mizpah.

So the men of Israel said,“ Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel; and it shall be that the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father’s house exemption from taxes in Israel.”

For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, Takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah The stock and the store, The whole supply of bread and the whole supply of water;The mighty man and the man of war, The judge and the prophet, And the diviner and the elder;The captain of fifty and the honorable man, The counselor and the skillful artisan, And the expert enchanter.“ I will give children to be their princes, And babes shall rule over them.The people will be oppressed, Every one by another and every one by his neighbor; The child will be insolent toward the elder, And the base toward the honorable.”When a man takes hold of his brother In the house of his father, saying,“ You have clothing; You be our ruler, And let these ruins be under your power,”In that day he will protest, saying,“ I cannot cure your ills, For in my house is neither food nor clothing; Do not make me a ruler of the people.”For Jerusalem stumbled, And Judah is fallen, Because their tongue and their doings Are against the Lord, To provoke the eyes of His glory.

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying,“ Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?”

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried among the cities of Gilead.

And so it was, when the people of Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.Then they said to Jephthah,“ Come and be our commander, that we may fight against the people of Ammon.”So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead,“ Did you not hate me, and expel me from my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah,“ That is why we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, But none shall be there, and all its princes shall be nothing.
