The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.

Moses’ father- in- law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad.

And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.

When the tribe of Judah left Jericho— the city of palms— the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father in law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.

Moses said to Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father- in- law,“ We are journeying to the place of which Yahweh said,‘ I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will treat you well; for Yahweh has spoken good concerning Israel.”He said to him,“ I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my relatives.”Moses said,“ Don’t leave us, please; because you know how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.It shall be, if you go with us— yes, it shall be— that whatever good Yahweh does to us, we will do the same to you.”

Now Heber the Kenite had separated himself from the Kenites, even from the children of Hobab, Moses’ brother- in- law, and had pitched his tent as far as the oak in Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh.

The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the South, heard that Israel came by the way of Atharim. He fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.

Saul said to the Kenites,“ Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

Moses went and returned to Jethro his father- in- law, and said to him,“ Please let me go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive.” Jethro said to Moses,“ Go in peace.”

Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father- in- law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.

At that time king Ahaz sent to the kings of Assyria to help him.

Moses went out to meet his father- in- law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.

He looked at the Kenite, and took up his parable, and said,“ Your dwelling place is strong. Your nest is set in the rock.Nevertheless Kain shall be wasted, until Asshur carries you away captive.”

Moses let his father- in- law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

Jethro, Moses’ father- in- law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father- in- law before God.

When Moses’ father- in- law saw all that he did to the people, he said,“ What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”Moses said to his father- in- law,“ Because the people come to me to inquire of God.When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”Moses’ father- in- law said to him,“ The thing that you do is not good.
