The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.

Moses’ father- in- law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad.

And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.

When the tribe of Judah left Jericho— the city of palms— the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father in law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.

The descendants of the Kenite, Moses’s father-in-law, had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah, which was in the Negev of Arad. They went to live among the people.

Now Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,“ We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said,‘ I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.”He answered,“ No, I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people.”But Moses said,“ Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the Lord gives us.” (niv)

Now Heber the Kenite had left the other Kenites, the descendants of Hobab, Moses’ brother-in-law, and pitched his tent by the great tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh. (niv)

When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. (niv)

Then he said to the Kenites,“ Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites. (niv)

So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. (niv)

Then he saw the Kenites and spoke his message:“ Your dwelling place is secure, your nest is set in a rock;yet you Kenites will be destroyed when Ashur takes you captive.” (niv)

Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country. (niv)

Then Jethro, Moses’ father- in- law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Moses’ father- in- law in the presence of God. (niv)

When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said,“ What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?”Moses answered him,“ Because the people come to me to seek God’s will.Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God’s decrees and instructions.”Moses’ father-in-law replied,“ What you are doing is not good.
