When the tribe of Judah left Jericho— the city of palms— the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father in law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.

The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.

Moses’ father- in- law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad.

And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.

Now the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the City of Date Palm Trees to Arad in the desert of Judah, located in the Negev. They went and lived with the people of Judah.

The children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother- in- law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.

One day Moses said to his brother in law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite,“ We are on our way to the place the Lord promised us, for he said,‘ I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”But Hobab replied,“ No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”“ Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded.“ You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide.If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the Lord gives us.”

Now Heber the Kenite, a descendant of Moses’ brother in law Hobab, had moved away from the other members of his tribe and pitched his tent by the oak of Zaanannim near Kedesh.

The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that the Israelites were approaching on the road through Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites and took some of them as prisoners.

Saul sent this warning to the Kenites:“ Move away from where the Amalekites live, or you will die with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up from Egypt.” So the Kenites packed up and left.

Eglon enlisted the Ammonites and Amalekites as allies, and then he went out and defeated Israel, taking possession of Jericho, the city of palms.

Meanwhile, Sisera ran to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because Heber’s family was on friendly terms with King Jabin of Hazor.

So Moses went back home to Jethro, his father in law.“ Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt,” Moses said.“ I don’t even know if they are still alive.”“ Go in peace,” Jethro replied.

One day Moses was tending the flock of his father in law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God.

“ Go to the settlement where the families of the Recabites live, and invite them to the Lord’s Temple. Take them into one of the inner rooms, and offer them some wine.”

Moses’ father in law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard about everything God had done for Moses and his people, the Israelites. He heard especially about how the Lord had rescued them from Egypt.

At that time King Ahaz of Judah asked the king of Assyria for help.

So Moses went out to meet his father in law. He bowed low and kissed him. They asked about each other’s welfare and then went into Moses’ tent.

Then he looked over toward the Kenites and delivered this message:“ Your home is secure; your nest is set in the rocks.But the Kenites will be destroyed when Assyria takes you captive.”

Soon after this, Moses said good bye to his father in law, who returned to his own land.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God. Aaron and all the elders of Israel came out and joined him in a sacrificial meal in God’s presence.

When Moses’ father in law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked,“ What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?”Moses replied,“ Because the people come to me to get a ruling from God.When a dispute arises, they come to me, and I am the one who settles the case between the quarreling parties. I inform the people of God’s decrees and give them his instructions.”“ This is not good!” Moses’ father in law exclaimed.
