Moses’ father- in- law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad.

The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.

And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.

When the tribe of Judah left Jericho— the city of palms— the Kenites, who were descendants of Moses’ father in law, traveled with them into the wilderness of Judah. They settled among the people there, near the town of Arad in the Negev.

The descendants of the Kenite, Moses’s father-in-law, had gone up with the men of Judah from the City of Palms to the Wilderness of Judah, which was in the Negev of Arad. They went to live among the people.

The children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother- in- law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.

Moses spoke to Hobab, the son of Reuel. Reuel was Moses’ father- in- law. Reuel was from Midian. Moses said to Hobab,“ We’re starting out for the place the Lord promised to us. He said to us,‘ I will give it to you.’ So come with us. We’ll treat you well. The Lord has promised to give good things to Israel.”Hobab answered,“ No. I can’t go. I’m going back to my own land. I’m returning to my own people.”But Moses said,“ Please don’t leave us. You know where we should camp in the desert. You can be our guide.So come with us. The Lord will give us good things. We’ll share them with you.”

Heber, the Kenite, had left the other Kenites. They came from the family line of Hobab. He was the brother- in- law of Moses. Heber set up his tent by the large tree in Zaanannim near Kedesh.

The Canaanite king of the city of Arad lived in the Negev Desert. He heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites. He captured some of them.

Then Saul said to the Kenites,“ You were kind to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt. Get away from the Amalekites. Then I won’t have to destroy you along with them.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.

Moses saw the Negev Desert. He saw the whole area from the Valley of Jericho all the way to Zoar. Jericho was also known as The City of Palm Trees.

He got the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him. All of them came and attacked Israel. They captured Jericho. Jericho was also known as The City of Palm Trees.

But Sisera ran away on foot. He ran to the tent of Jael. She was the wife of Heber, the Kenite. Sisera ran there because there was a treaty between Heber’s family and Jabin, the king of Hazor.

The sixth was Ozem. And the seventh was David.

Then Moses went back to his father- in- law Jethro. He said to him,“ Let me return to my own people in Egypt. I want to see if any of them are still alive.” Jethro said,“ Go. I hope everything goes well with you.”

Moses was taking care of the flock of his father- in- law Jethro. Jethro was the priest of Midian. Moses led the flock to the western side of the desert. He came to Horeb. It was the mountain of God.

“ Go to the members of the family line of Rekab. Invite them to come to one of the side rooms in my house. Then give them wine to drink.”

Moses’ father- in- law Jethro was the priest of Midian. He heard about everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel. Jethro heard how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

At that time King Ahaz sent men to the king of Assyria to get help.

So Moses went out to meet his father- in- law. Moses bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other. Then they went into the tent.

Then Balaam saw the Kenites. He spoke the message he had received from God. He said,“ The place where you live is safe. Your nest is on a high cliff.But you Kenites will be destroyed. Ashur will take you as prisoners.”

Moses sent his father- in- law on his way. So Jethro returned to his own country.

Then Moses’ father- in- law Jethro brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God. Aaron came with all the elders of Israel. They ate a meal with Moses’ father- in- law in the sight of God.

His father- in- law saw everything Moses was doing for the people. So he said,“ Aren’t you trying to do too much for the people? You are the only judge. And all these people are standing around you from morning until evening.”Moses answered,“ The people come to me to find out what God wants them to do.Anytime they don’t agree with one another, they come to me. I decide between them. I tell them about God’s rules and instructions.”Moses’ father- in- law replied,“ What you are doing isn’t good.
