Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you.

嗐！你们这些富足人哪，应当哭泣、号啕，因为将有苦难临到你们身上。

注意！你们这些富足人哪，要为将要临到你们身上的灾难哭泣、号啕。

注意！你们这些富足人哪，要为将要临到你们身上的灾难哭泣、号啕。

你们这些富有的人啊！为那将要临到你们身上的灾难痛哭哀号吧！

你们富有的人哪，应当为那将要临到你们的灾祸哭泣哀号。

现在来吧，你们这些富有的人哪！应当为那些将要临到你们的惨祸而痛哭、哀号！

嗐！你們這些富足人哪，應當哭泣、號咷，因為將有苦難臨到你們身上。

注意！你們這些富足人哪，要為將要臨到你們身上的災難哭泣、號咷。

注意！你們這些富足人哪，要為將要臨到你們身上的災難哭泣、號咷。

你們這些富有的人啊！為那將要臨到你們身上的災難痛哭哀號吧！

你們富有的人哪，應當為那將要臨到你們的災禍哭泣哀號。

來，如今請注意！富足的人哪，應當因你們的慘難、那將要臨到的慘難、來哭泣號咷。

現在來吧，你們這些富有的人哪！應當為那些將要臨到你們的慘禍而痛哭、哀號！

噫、富者歟、宜悲泣號咷、因苦難將臨於爾也、

富者當思將來之苦而號泣、

噫、富者乎、當哀哭號泣、因苦難將臨爾也、

咄咄富人、爾其休矣、災禍將臨爾身、爾盍哀號痛哭乎！

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you.

You rich people, listen to me. Cry and weep, because you will soon be suffering.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

Come now, you rich people, weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you.

Come now, you rich people, weep and howl for your miseries which are coming upon you.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!

Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you.

Come now, you rich people! Weep and wail over the miseries that are coming on you.

Go to now,[ ye] rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon[ you].

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming on you.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you.

Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

This is what the Lord says:“ Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.

Scream in terror, for the day of the Lord has arrived— the time for the Almighty to destroy.

Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death.

Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.In an instant they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.When you arise, O Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.

“ What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now.What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.

Look here, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.”

For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong.They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.They wear pride like a jeweled necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty.These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for!They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.

The rich among you have become wealthy through extortion and violence. Your citizens are so used to lying that their tongues can no longer tell the truth.

Our ancestors captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took over houses full of good things, with cisterns already dug and vineyards and olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate until they were full and grew fat and enjoyed themselves in all your blessings.“ But despite all this, they were disobedient and rebelled against you. They turned their backs on your Law, they killed your prophets who warned them to return to you, and they committed terrible blasphemies.

The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?

They will vomit the wealth they swallowed. God won’t let them keep it down.They will suck the poison of cobras. The viper will kill them.They will never again enjoy streams of olive oil or rivers of milk and honey.They will give back everything they worked for. Their wealth will bring them no joy.For they oppressed the poor and left them destitute. They foreclosed on their homes.They were always greedy and never satisfied. Nothing remains of all the things they dreamed about.Nothing is left after they finish gorging themselves. Therefore, their prosperity will not endure.“ In the midst of plenty, they will run into trouble and be overcome by misery.May God give them a bellyful of trouble. May God rain down his anger upon them.When they try to escape an iron weapon, a bronze tipped arrow will pierce them.The arrow is pulled from their back, and the arrowhead glistens with blood. The terrors of death are upon them.Their treasures will be thrown into deepest darkness. A wildfire will devour their goods, consuming all they have left.The heavens will reveal their guilt, and the earth will testify against them.A flood will sweep away their house. God’s anger will descend on them in torrents.This is the reward that God gives the wicked. It is the inheritance decreed by God.”

Then he told them a story:“ A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.He said to himself,‘ What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’Then he said,‘ I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.And I’ll sit back and say to myself,“ My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’“ Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”

“ But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! Then they abandoned the God who had made them; they made light of the Rock of their salvation.

For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes to live in,and when your flocks and herds have become very large and your silver and gold have multiplied along with everything else, be careful!Do not become proud at that time and forget the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.

Your silver and gold will not save you on that day of the Lord’s anger. For the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy. He will make a terrifying end of all the people on earth.

Jesus said,“ There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores.As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.“ Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried,and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.“ The rich man shouted,‘ Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’“ But Abraham said to him,‘ Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.

Despair, all you farmers! Wail, all you vine growers! Weep, because the wheat and barley— all the crops of the field— are ruined.

“ What is your mother? A lioness among lions! She lay down among the young lions and reared her cubs.

Weep, you cypress trees, for all the ruined cedars; the most majestic ones have fallen. Weep, you oaks of Bashan, for the thick forests have been cut down.Listen to the wailing of the shepherds, for their rich pastures are destroyed. Hear the young lions roaring, for their thickets in the Jordan Valley are ruined.

You drink wine by the bowlful and perfume yourselves with fragrant lotions. You care nothing about the ruin of your nation.Therefore, you will be the first to be led away as captives. Suddenly, all your parties will end.

They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God.Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enoughto live forever and never see the grave.Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind.The grave is their eternal home, where they will stay forever. They may name their estates after themselves,but their fame will not last. They will die, just like animals.This is the fate of fools, though they are remembered as being wise. InterludeLike sheep, they are led to the grave, where death will be their shepherd. In the morning the godly will rule over them. Their bodies will rot in the grave, far from their grand estates.But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave. InterludeSo don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid.For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave.In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success.But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day.People who boast of their wealth don’t understand; they will die, just like animals.

At that time the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, called you to weep and mourn. He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins and to wear clothes of burlap to show your remorse.But instead, you dance and play; you slaughter cattle and kill sheep. You feast on meat and drink wine. You say,“ Let’s feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.Money is put into risky investments that turn sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing left to pass on to one’s children.

Then Jesus said to his disciples,“ I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.I’ll say it again— it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”

Dress yourselves in burlap and weep, you priests! Wail, you who serve before the altar! Come, spend the night in burlap, you ministers of my God. For there is no grain or wine to offer at the Temple of your God.

By the power of your hand, O Lord, destroy those who look to this world for their reward. But satisfy the hunger of your treasured ones. May their children have plenty, leaving an inheritance for their descendants.

Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.

But Jesus turned and said to them,“ Daughters of Jerusalem, don’t weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.For the days are coming when they will say,‘ Fortunate indeed are the women who are childless, the wombs that have not borne a child and the breasts that have never nursed.’

Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you wine drinkers! All the grapes are ruined, and all your sweet wine is gone.

Then everyone— the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person— all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.And they cried to the mountains and the rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?”

So put on clothes of mourning and weep with broken hearts, for the fierce anger of the Lord is still upon us.
