Take me back, so that I can return, for you, LORD, are my God.After my return, I felt regret; After I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”Isn’t Ephraim a precious son to me, a delightful child? Whenever I speak against him, I certainly still think about him. Therefore, my inner being yearns for him; I will truly have compassion on him. This is the LORD’s declaration.

Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, since that is the end of all mankind, and the living should take it to heart.Grief is better than laughter, for when a face is sad, a heart may be glad.The heart of the wise is in a house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in a house of pleasure.It is better to listen to rebuke from a wise person than to listen to the song of fools,for like the crackling of burning thorns under the pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This too is futile.

The survivors among them will escape and live on the mountains. Like doves of the valley, all of them will moan, each over his own iniquity.

“‘ Son,’ Abraham said,‘ remember that during your life you received your good things, just as Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, while you are in agony.

On that day the Lord GOD of Armies called for weeping, for wailing, for shaven heads, and for the wearing of sackcloth.But look: joy and gladness, butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep and goats, eating of meat, and drinking of wine—“ Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

I said about laughter,“ It is madness,” and about pleasure,“ What does this accomplish?”

Then the young women will rejoice with dancing, while young and old men rejoice together. I will turn their mourning into joy, give them consolation, and bring happiness out of grief.

It was good for me to be afflicted so that I could learn your statutes.

My eyes pour out streams of tears because people do not follow your instruction.
