Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.

where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.Then the devil said to him,“ If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”But Jesus told him,“ No! The Scriptures say,‘ People do not live by bread alone.’”Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.“ I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said,“ because they are mine to give to anyone I please.I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”Jesus replied,“ The Scriptures say,‘ You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said,“ If you are the Son of God, jump off!For the Scriptures say,‘ He will order his angels to protect and guard you.And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”Jesus responded,“ The Scriptures also say,‘ You must not test the Lord your God.’”When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.

This great dragon— the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world— was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens,“ It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night.And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.

Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?

And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

He said,“ I came naked from my mother’s womb, and I will be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!”

Do not be stubborn, as they were, but submit yourselves to the Lord. Come to his Temple, which he has set apart as holy forever. Worship the Lord your God so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.

So Samuel told Eli everything; he didn’t hold anything back.“ It is the Lord’s will,” Eli replied.“ Let him do what he thinks best.”

For they don’t understand God’s way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God’s way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law.

Say to God,“ How awesome are your deeds! Your enemies cringe before your mighty power.

For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority— whether the king as head of state,

“ After this time had passed, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up to heaven. My sanity returned, and I praised and worshiped the Most High and honored the one who lives forever. His rule is everlasting, and his kingdom is eternal.All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him,‘ What do you mean by doing these things?’“ When my sanity returned to me, so did my honor and glory and kingdom. My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored as head of my kingdom, with even greater honor than before.“ Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.”

You will be driven from human society, and you will live in the fields with the wild animals. You will eat grass like a cow, and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses.

Once more the king sent a third captain with fifty men. But this time the captain went up the hill and fell to his knees before Elijah. He pleaded with him,“ O man of God, please spare my life and the lives of these, your fifty servants.See how the fire from heaven came down and destroyed the first two groups. But now please spare my life!”Then the angel of the Lord said to Elijah,“ Go down with him, and don’t be afraid of him.” So Elijah got up and went with him to the king.

When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. InterludeFinally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself,“ I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude

Then Job replied to the Lord,“ I am nothing— how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand.I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.”

But while in deep distress, Manasseh sought the Lord his God and sincerely humbled himself before the God of his ancestors.And when he prayed, the Lord listened to him and was moved by his request. So the Lord brought Manasseh back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then Manasseh finally realized that the Lord alone is God!

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Say to the king and his mother,“ Come down from your thrones and sit in the dust, for your glorious crowns will soon be snatched from your heads.”

Then Job replied to the Lord:“ I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you.You asked,‘ Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I— and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me.You said,‘ Listen and I will speak! I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.’I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes.I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”

But if he is through with me, then let him do what seems best to him.”

Rebuke these enemy nations— these wild animals lurking in the reeds, this herd of bulls among the weaker calves. Make them bring bars of silver in humble tribute. Scatter the nations that delight in war.

Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

“ And so, King Agrippa, I obeyed that vision from heaven.

The jailer called for lights and ran to the dungeon and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas.Then he brought them out and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They replied,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”

For the Scriptures say,“‘ As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,‘ every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to God.’”
