Come now, ye that say, To- day or to- morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain:

Don’t brag about tomorrow. You don’t know what a day will bring.

He thought to himself,‘ What should I do? I don’t have any place to store my crops.’“ Then he said,‘ This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones. I will store my extra grain in them.I’ll say to myself,“ You have plenty of grain stored away for many years. Take life easy. Eat, drink and have a good time.” ’“ But God said to him,‘ You foolish man! Tonight I will take your life away from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

They said to one another,“ Come on! Let’s make bricks and bake them well.” They used bricks instead of stones. They used tar to hold the bricks together.Then they said,“ Come on! Let’s build a city for ourselves. Let’s build a tower that reaches to the sky. We’ll make a name for ourselves. Then we won’t be scattered over the whole earth.”

Priests and people alike will suffer. So will masters and their servants. And so will women and their female servants. Sellers and buyers alike will suffer. So will those who borrow and those who lend. And so will those who owe money and those who lend it.

I said to myself,“ Come on. I’ll try out pleasure. I want to find out if it is good.” But it also proved to be meaningless.

You rich people, listen to me. Cry and weep, because you will soon be suffering.

Those who mourn should live as if they did not. Those who are happy should live as if they were not. Those who buy something should live as if it were not theirs to keep.

Come on! Let us go down and mix up their language. Then they will not be able to understand one another.”

Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard. I will take away its fence. And the vineyard will be destroyed. I will break down its wall. And people will walk all over my vineyard.

“‘ The time has come! The day has arrived! I will soon pour out my great anger on the whole crowd of you. Do not let the buyer be happy. Do not let the seller be sad.

They are like dogs that love to eat. They never get enough. They are like shepherds who don’t have any understanding. All of them do as they please. They only look for what they can get for themselves.“ Come!” they shout.“ Let’s get some wine! Let’s drink all the beer we can! Tomorrow we’ll do the same thing. And that will be even better than today.”
