We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

蓋吾輩之過失、不一而足、如能慎言、以免口過、則庶幾矣。若而人者、亦可謂能自勒其口、而自主其身者矣。

All of us get tripped up in many ways. Suppose someone is never wrong in what they say. Then they are perfect. They are able to keep their whole body under control.

For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

For,“ Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.

For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

“ When they sin against you— for there is no one who does not sin— and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive to their own lands, far away or near;

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.

As it is written:“ There is no one righteous, not even one;

keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.

Who can say,“ I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?

So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
