My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree produce olives? Can a grapevine produce figs? Of course not. And a saltwater spring can’t produce fresh water either.

For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit.For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush.

You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they?So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.So then, you will know them by their fruits.

Yet I planted you as a choice vine, A completely faithful seed. How then have you turned yourself before Me Into the degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?

“ Either assume the tree to be good as well as its fruit good, or assume the tree to be bad as well as its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.

If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are as well.But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree,do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you.

He dug it all around, cleared it of stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. And He built a tower in the middle of it, And also carved out a wine vat in it; Then He expected it to produce good grapes, But it produced only worthless ones.“ And now, you inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, Judge between Me and My vineyard.What more was there to do for My vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I expected it to produce good grapes did it produce worthless ones?

When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, because they were bitter; for that reason it was named Marah.So the people grumbled at Moses, saying,“ What are we to drink?”Then he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. There He made for them a statute and regulation, and there He tested them.

Then the men of the city said to Elisha,“ Behold now, the site of the city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.”And he said,“ Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him.Then he went out to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ I have purified these waters; there shall not come from there death or unfruitfulness any longer.’ ”So the waters have been purified to this day, in accordance with the word of Elisha which he spoke.

Then he said to me,“ These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the Arabah; then they go toward the sea, being made to flow into the sea, and the waters of the sea become fresh.And it will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes.And it will come about that fishermen will stand beside it; from Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the spreading of nets. Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, very many.But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.
