若有人自以為虔誠、而不能自制其舌、是為欺心之人、其虔誠偽也。

人若自以為虔敬、而不捫其舌、自欺其心、其虔敬虛矣、

人自謂虔共、如不捫厥舌、乃迷厥心、則其虔共徒然、

若爾中有人自以為虔敬、而不制其舌、自欺其心、此人之虔敬徒然、

Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

Suppose people think their beliefs and how they live are both right. But they don’t control what they say. Then they are fooling themselves. Their beliefs and way of life are not worth anything at all.

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.

If anyone thinks he is religious without controlling his tongue, his religion is useless and he deceives himself.

If anyone thinks himself to be religious, yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

守我口如瓶。防我意如城。

莫使惡言浪語、出爾口中。當因人施教、循循善誘、以成人之美。

聖詠有之、『人欲善其生、長度康樂日：守舌毋惡言、緘口絕詭譎；

授爾立身法。傳爾壽康訣。

蓋吾輩之過失、不一而足、如能慎言、以免口過、則庶幾矣。若而人者、亦可謂能自勒其口、而自主其身者矣。吾人如置勒馬口、則馬身之駕馭、無不如意。舟身雖大、且為暴風所驅、而舵師宴然把一小舵、亦能駕駛自如。舌在人身、亦復如是其形雖小、其誇實大。星星之火、可以燎原；舌猶火也、亦眾惡之府也；深藏我百體之中、而玷污我七尺之軀、引上地獄之火、而焚燬我生命之輪。

若作和羹、爾為鹽梅；庶知如何因人而施教也。

爾其深味斯言、三覆思之；蓋有者必見增益、而無者則並其自以為有者、而奪之矣。』

然道貴實踐、聞而不行、自欺而已。

一切穢褻浪謔輕薄之詞、皆宜痛絕；惟宜謳歌主德、稱謝洪恩。

此固我親愛兄弟之所知也。人人應敏於聽、而訥於言。慎毋動怒、

勿效拗騾。不甘馴御。載鞭載勒。斯知去處。

然吾人屹然不搖、未嘗於須臾之間、受其羈縻；此亦所以使福音之真傳、長存爾中、始終不渝耳。至於眾望所歸之同人、予亦未因其聲價之特殊、而另眼相看。夫人之貴賤、於天主乎何有？實則彼等於予亦未有所增；

既傳世教為寶訓、向我朝拜亦徒然。」』

爾能恪守福音、如吾所傳、則蒙救也必矣。若是而不蒙救者、其惟所信者妄歟？

如此方能成全基督之道。若無而為有、虛而為實、是為欺心之人。

既奉世教為寶訓、向我朝拜亦徒然。」

嗚呼、爾亦淺人也已！爾亦知無行之信、乃為空虛無實乎？

幸毋自欺！苟爾中有自矜其世俗之智巧者、吾願其人棄其智巧而反於愚拙、是則真智巧矣。

不寧惟是、吾人將為天主之偽證矣。蓋死者苟無復活、則天主實未復活基督、而吾人強為之證曰、天主已復活之矣、是非偽證而何。

彼等既見予所受聖寵之不虛、於是號稱教會柱石之雅各伯基法及若望、相率與予及巴拿巴殷勤握手、以表心契；我往外邦、而彼等則傳道於受割禮者。

果爾、則爾向之所受一切痛苦艱難、亦有何益、將非盡付東流乎？
