烈日以曝之、毒熱以薰之、而草槁矣、而花落矣、而其美亡矣。富貴之終歸衰落亦復如是。

For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.

There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.Ye have condemned[ and] killed the just;[ and] he doth not resist you.Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

And they that use this world, as not abusing[ it]: for the fashion of this world passeth away.

My days[ are] like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.

But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said,[ It is] better for me to die than to live.

Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.How are they[ brought] into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.As a dream when[ one] awaketh;[ so], O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;None[ of them] can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:( For the redemption of their soul[ is] precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)That he should still live for ever,[ and] not see corruption.For he seeth[ that] wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.Their inward thought[ is, that] their houses[ shall continue] for ever,[ and] their dwelling places to all generations; they call[ their] lands after their own names.Nevertheless man[ being] in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts[ that] perish.This their way[ is] their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty[ is] a fading flower, which[ are] on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.

And the glorious beauty, which[ is] on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower,[ and] as the hasty fruit before the summer; which[ when] he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
