Flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not retain his strength, nor shall the mighty save his life;he who handles the bow shall not stand, and he who is swift of foot shall not save himself, nor shall he who rides the horse save his life;and he who is stout of heart among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day,” declares the Lord.

Therefore I will make Samaria a heap in the open country, a place for planting vineyards, and I will pour down her stones into the valley and uncover her foundations.All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces, all her wages shall be burned with fire, and all her idols I will lay waste, for from the fee of a prostitute she gathered them, and to the fee of a prostitute they shall return.For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will make lamentation like the jackals, and mourning like the ostriches.

In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other godsand walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced.And the people of Israel did secretly against the Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, from watchtower to fortified city.They set up for themselves pillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree,and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger,and they served idols, of which the Lord had said to them,“ You shall not do this.”Yet the Lord warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying,“ Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”But they would not listen, but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God.They despised his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after false idols and became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the Lord had commanded them that they should not do like them.And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of two calves; and they made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings and used divination and omens and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.Judah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced.And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

Therefore thus says the Lord:“‘ Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided up with a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’”

the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder,the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms.

Israel is swallowed up; already they are among the nations as a useless vessel.

Thus it shall be done to you, O Bethel, because of your great evil. At dawn the king of Israel shall be utterly cut off.

Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird— no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them till none is left. Woe to them when I depart from them!Ephraim, as I have seen, was like a young palm planted in a meadow; but Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.Give them, O Lord— what will you give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.Every evil of theirs is in Gilgal; there I began to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more; all their princes are rebels.Ephraim is stricken; their root is dried up; they shall bear no fruit. Even though they give birth, I will put their beloved children to death.My God will reject them because they have not listened to him; they shall be wanderers among the nations.

They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,“ Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”

And the Lord said,“ Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”

Thus says the Lord:“ As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.

“ Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel; forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up.”For thus says the Lord God:“ The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”
