Those people weave their evil plans together like a spider’s web. But the webs they make can’t be used as clothes. They can’t cover themselves with what they make. Their acts are evil. They do things to harm others.

“ Woe to the rebellious children,” says the Lord,“ Who take counsel, but not of Me, And who devise plans, but not of My Spirit, That they may add sin to sin;

Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it.As often as it goes out it will take you; For morning by morning it will pass over, And by day and by night; It will be a terror just to understand the report.”For the bed is too short to stretch out on, And the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in it.

But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.

For they do not know to do right,’ Says the Lord,‘ Who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.’”

Whose confidence shall be cut off, And whose trust is a spider’s web.He leans on his house, but it does not stand. He holds it fast, but it does not endure.

just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:“ Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered;Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”

‘ Make a chain, For the land is filled with crimes of blood, And the city is full of violence.

And I said:“ Hear now, O heads of Jacob, And you rulers of the house of Israel: Is it not for you to know justice?You who hate good and love evil; Who strip the skin from My people, And the flesh from their bones;Who also eat the flesh of My people, Flay their skin from them, Break their bones, And chop them in pieces Like meat for the pot, Like flesh in the caldron.”Then they will cry to the Lord, But He will not hear them; He will even hide His face from them at that time, Because they have been evil in their deeds.Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets Who make my people stray; Who chant“ Peace” While they chew with their teeth, But who prepare war against him Who puts nothing into their mouths:“ Therefore you shall have night without vision, And you shall have darkness without divination; The sun shall go down on the prophets, And the day shall be dark for them.So the seers shall be ashamed, And the diviners abashed; Indeed they shall all cover their lips; For there is no answer from God.”But truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, And of justice and might, To declare to Jacob his transgression And to Israel his sin.Now hear this, You heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who abhor justice And pervert all equity,Who build up Zion with bloodshed And Jerusalem with iniquity:Her heads judge for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, and say,“ Is not the Lord among us? No harm can come upon us.”

O Lord, how long shall I cry, And You will not hear? Even cry out to You,“ Violence!” And You will not save.Why do You show me iniquity, And cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; There is strife, and contention arises.Therefore the law is powerless, And justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore perverse judgment proceeds.

Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;

Because you say,‘ I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’— and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked—I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

For her rich men are full of violence, Her inhabitants have spoken lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel:“ Because you despise this word, And trust in oppression and perversity, And rely on them,Therefore this iniquity shall be to you Like a breach ready to fall, A bulge in a high wall, Whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.And He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel, Which is broken in pieces; He shall not spare. So there shall not be found among its fragments A shard to take fire from the hearth, Or to take water from the cistern.”

Woe to those who devise iniquity, And work out evil on their beds! At morning light they practice it, Because it is in the power of their hand.They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.Therefore thus says the Lord:“ Behold, against this family I am devising disaster, From which you cannot remove your necks; Nor shall you walk haughtily, For this is an evil time.

In the same day I will punish All those who leap over the threshold, Who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

Indeed you fast for strife and debate, And to strike with the fist of wickedness. You will not fast as you do this day, To make your voice heard on high.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

“ Lately My people have risen up as an enemy— You pull off the robe with the garment From those who trust you, as they pass by, Like men returned from war.

No, in heart you work wickedness; You weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth.

Her princes in her midst are roaring lions; Her judges are evening wolves That leave not a bone till morning.Her prophets are insolent, treacherous people; Her priests have polluted the sanctuary, They have done violence to the law.
