For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.

But they do not know how to do what is right,” declares the Lord,“ these who store up violence and devastation in their citadels.”

His confidence is fragile, And his trust is a spider’s web.He depends on his house, but it does not stand; He holds on to it, but it does not endure.

just as David also speaks of the blessing of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:“ Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered.Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”

‘ Make the chain, for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.

The sun will go down on the prophets, And the day will become dark over them.The seers will be put to shame, And the diviners will be ashamed. Indeed, they will all cover their lips Because there is no answer from God.On the other hand, I am filled with power— With the Spirit of the Lord— And with justice and courage To make known to Jacob his rebellious act, And to Israel his sin.Now hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who despise justice And twist everything that is straight,Who build Zion with bloodshed, And Jerusalem with malice.Her leaders pronounce judgment for a bribe, Her priests teach for pay, And her prophets divine for money. Yet they lean on the Lord, saying,“ Is the Lord not in our midst? Catastrophe will not come upon us.”

How long, Lord, have I called for help, And You do not hear? I cry out to You,“ Violence!” Yet You do not save.Why do You make me see disaster, And make me look at destitution? Yes, devastation and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises.Therefore the Law is ignored, And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore justice comes out confused.

Are you postponing the day of disaster, And would you bring near the seat of violence?

Because you say,“ I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have no need of anything,” and you do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked,I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to apply to your eyes so that you may see.

For the rich people of the city are full of violence, Her residents speak lies, And their tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

because by the works of the Law none of mankind will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes knowledge of sin.But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,but it is the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction,

Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.

Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says:“ Since you have rejected this word And have put your trust in oppression and crookedness, and have relied on them,Therefore this wrongdoing will be to you Like a breach about to fall, A bulge in a high wall, Whose collapse comes suddenly in an instant,Whose collapse is like the smashing of a potter’s jar, So ruthlessly shattered That a shard will not be found among its pieces To take fire from a hearth Or to scoop water from a cistern.”

Woe to those who devise wrongdoing, Who practice evil on their beds! When morning comes, they do it, Because it is in the power of their hands.They covet fields, so they seize them; And houses, so they take them. They exploit a man and his house, A person and his inheritance.Therefore this is what the Lord says:“ Behold, I am planning against this family a catastrophe From which you cannot remove your necks; And you will not walk haughtily, For it will be an evil time.

And on that day I will punish all who leap on the temple threshold, Who fill the house of their lord with violence and deceit.

Behold, you fast for contention and strife, and to strike with a wicked fist. You do not fast like you have done today to make your voice heard on high!

For the vineyard of the Lord of armies is the house of Israel, And the people of Judah are His delightful plant. So He waited for justice, but behold, there was bloodshed; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

Recently My people have arisen as an enemy— You strip the robe off the garment From unsuspecting passers by, From those returned from war.

No, in heart you practice injustice; On earth you clear a way for the violence of your hands.

Her leaders within her are roaring lions, Her judges are wolves at evening; They have no bones to gnaw in the morning.Her prophets are insolent, treacherous men; Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the Law.
