Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.

Israel’s prophets are blind. They don’t know the Lord. All of them are like watchdogs that can’t even bark. They just lie around and dream. They love to sleep.

His watchmen are blind; they are all without knowledge; they are all silent dogs; they cannot bark, dreaming, lying down, loving to slumber.

For the leaders of my people— the Lord’s watchmen, his shepherds— are blind and ignorant. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.

Israel’s watchmen are blind, all of them, they know nothing; all of them are mute dogs, they cannot bark; they dream, lie down, and love to sleep.

Beware of the dogs; beware of the evil workers; beware of the false circumcision.

For Yahweh has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes, the prophets; and he has covered your heads, the seers.

Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

The days of visitation have come. The days of reckoning have come. Israel will consider the prophet to be a fool, and the man who is inspired to be insane, because of the abundance of your sins, and because your hostility is great.A prophet watches over Ephraim with my God. A fowler’s snare is on all of his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.

Your shepherds slumber, king of Assyria. Your nobles lie down. Your people are scattered on the mountains, and there is no one to gather them.

to wit, the prophets of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace,’” says the Lord Yahweh.’”

“ Cry aloud! Don’t spare! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins.

Then I said,“ Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, the prophets tell them,‘ You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”Then Yahweh said to me,“ The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.

Your watchmen lift up their voice. Together they sing; for they shall see eye to eye when Yahweh returns to Zion.

But if the watchman sees the sword come, and doesn’t blow the trumpet, and the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes, and takes any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’

I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth, that you will be mute, and will not be able to correct them; for they are a rebellious house.But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall tell them,‘ This is what the Lord Yahweh says.’ He who hears, let him hear; and he who refuses, let him refuse; for they are a rebellious house.”

Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel Aviv, that lived by the river Chebar, and to where they lived; and I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days.At the end of seven days, Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,“ Son of man, I have made you a watchman to the house of Israel. Therefore hear the word from my mouth, and warn them from me.When I tell the wicked,‘ You will surely die;’ and you give him no warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; that wicked man will die in his iniquity; but I will require his blood at your hand.

I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding:Behold, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down.Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction:a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep,so your poverty will come as a robber and your want as an armed man.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. Because you have forgotten your God’s law, I will also forget your children.

“ I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria. They prophesied by Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.In the prophets of Jerusalem I have also seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one returns from his wickedness. They have all become to me as Sodom, and its inhabitants as Gomorrah.”

Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;which having no chief, overseer, or ruler,provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

“ Woe to you, you blind guides, who say,‘ Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?‘ Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who has been living in it.He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!“ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.

He spoke a parable to them.“ Can the blind guide the blind? Won’t they both fall into a pit?A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.

“ For from their least even to their greatest, everyone is given to covetousness. From the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.They have healed also the hurt of my people superficially, saying,‘ Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace.

“ It is like a man, traveling to another country, having left his house, and given authority to his servants, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch.Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning;lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping.What I tell you, I tell all: Watch.”

“ Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.So the ship master came to him, and said to him,“ What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God! Maybe your God will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
