He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

People looked down on him. They didn’t accept him. He knew all about pain and suffering. He was like someone people turn their faces away from. We looked down on him. We didn’t have any respect for him.

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Then He said to them,“ My soul is swallowed up in sorrow— to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake.”

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.

This is what the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, says to one who is despised, to one abhorred by people, to a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and stand up, and princes will bow down, because of the Lord, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel— and He has chosen you.”

keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, so that you won’t grow weary and lose heart.

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by people.Everyone who sees me mocks me; they sneer and shake their heads:“ He relies on the Lord; let Him rescue him; let the Lord deliver him, since He takes pleasure in him.”

During His earthly life, He offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the One who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence.

I gave My back to those who beat Me, and My cheeks to those who tore out My beard. I did not hide My face from scorn and spitting.

Then I said to them,“ If it seems right to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” So they weighed my wages, 30 pieces of silver.“ Throw it to the potter,” the Lord said to me— this magnificent price I was valued by them. So I took the 30 pieces of silver and threw it into the house of the Lord, to the potter.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin.

saying,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”

They started laughing at Him, because they knew she was dead.

They kept hitting Him on the head with a reed and spitting on Him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying Him homage.

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and scoffing at Him.

and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death.For it is clear that He does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring.Therefore, He had to be like His brothers in every way, so that He could become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.For since He Himself was tested and has suffered, He is able to help those who are tested.

“ Elijah does come first and restores everything,” He replied.“ How then is it written about the Son of Man that He must suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

Then He took the Twelve aside and told them,“ Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and He will be mocked, insulted, spit on;and after they flog Him, they will kill Him, and He will rise on the third day.”

and said,“ Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive He said,‘ After three days I will rise again.’

The Jews responded to Him,“ Aren’t we right in saying that You’re a Samaritan and have a demon?”

Those who passed by were yelling insults at Him, shaking their headsand saying,“ The One who would demolish the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked Him and said,“ He saved others, but He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel! Let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in Him.He has put His trust in God; let God rescue Him now— if He wants Him! For He said,‘ I am God’s Son.’”In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with Him kept taunting Him.

Now, daughter who is under attack, you slash yourself in grief; a siege is set against us! They are striking the judge of Israel on the cheek with a rod.

Jesus wept.

You know the insults I endure— my shame and disgrace. You are aware of all my adversaries.Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. I waited for sympathy, but there was none; for comforters, but found no one.

Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.Then He said to them,“ My soul is swallowed up in sorrow— to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with Me.”

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him.But you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you.You killed the source of life, whom God raised from the dead; we are witnesses of this.

Then Jeshurun became fat and rebelled— you became fat, bloated, and gorged. He abandoned the God who made him and scorned the Rock of his salvation.

Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took the 30 pieces of silver, the price of Him whose price was set by the Israelites,and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.

I mourned and fasted, but it brought me insults.I wore sackcloth as my clothing, and I was a joke to them.Those who sit at the city gate talk about me, and drunkards make up songs about me.

In one month I got rid of three shepherds. I became impatient with them, and they also detested me.

Then they all cried out together,“ Take this man away! Release Barabbas to us!”( He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again,but they kept shouting,“ Crucify! Crucify Him!”A third time he said to them,“ Why? What has this man done wrong? I have found in Him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have Him whipped and then release Him.”But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And their voices won out.So Pilate decided to grant their demandand released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.

As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it,

But as for me— poor and in pain— let Your salvation protect me, God.
