My servant grew up in the Lord’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him.

He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him.He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.They are reborn— not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Jesus responded,“ Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?

“ For the time is coming,” says the Lord,“ when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David’s line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land.

Then they scoffed,“ He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.

It was now about noon on the day of preparation for the Passover. And Pilate said to the people,“ Look, here is your king!”“ Away with him,” they yelled.“ Away with him! Crucify him!”“ What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked.“ We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back.

But Jesus replied,“ Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place even to lay his head.”

Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said,“ Look, here is the man!”

The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.

Then they cursed him and said,“ You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses!We know God spoke to Moses, but we don’t even know where this man comes from.”

Tell him,‘ This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: Here is the man called the Branch. He will branch out from where he is and build the Temple of the Lord.

When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee.There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.
