A fire devours in front of them, and behind them a flame blazes. The land in front of them is like the garden of Eden, but behind them, it is like a desert wasteland; there is no escape from them.

Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the LORD’s garden and the land of Egypt.( This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

The cedars in God’s garden could not eclipse it; the pine trees couldn’t compare with its branches, nor could the plane trees match its boughs. No tree in the garden of God could compare with it in beauty.I made it beautiful with its many limbs, and all the trees of Eden, which were in God’s garden, envied it.“‘ Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: Since it towered high in stature and set its top among the clouds, and it grew proud on account of its height,

the parched ground will become a pool, and the thirsty land, springs. In the haunt of jackals, in their lairs, there will be grass, reeds, and papyrus.A road will be there and a way; it will be called the Holy Way. The unclean will not travel on it, but it will be for the one who walks the path. Fools will not wander on it.There will be no lion there, and no vicious beast will go up on it; they will not be found there. But the redeemed will walk on it,and the ransomed of the LORD will return and come to Zion with singing, crowned with unending joy. Joy and gladness will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee.

“ Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God.“ Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and announce to her that her time of hard service is over, her iniquity has been pardoned, and she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins.”

I will open rivers on the barren heights, and springs in the middle of the plains. I will turn the desert into a pool and dry land into springs.I will plant cedar, acacia, myrtle, and olive trees in the wilderness. I will put juniper, elm, and cypress trees together in the desert.

They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will be radiant with joy because of the LORD’s goodness, because of the grain, the new wine, the fresh oil, and because of the young of the flocks and herds. Their life will be like an irrigated garden, and they will no longer grow weak from hunger.Then the young women will rejoice with dancing, while young and old men rejoice together. I will turn their mourning into joy, give them consolation, and bring happiness out of grief.I will refresh the priests with an abundance, and my people will be satisfied with my goodness. This is the LORD’s declaration.

The wilderness and the dry land will be glad; the desert will rejoice and blossom like a wildflower.It will blossom abundantly and will also rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God.

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners;to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of our God’s vengeance; to comfort all who mourn,to provide for those who mourn in Zion; to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, festive oil instead of mourning, and splendid clothes instead of despair. And they will be called righteous trees, planted by the LORD to glorify him.They will rebuild the ancient ruins; they will restore the former devastations; they will renew the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

I will listen to what God will say; surely the LORD will declare peace to his people, his faithful ones, and not let them go back to foolish ways.

For the LORD has called you, like a wife deserted and wounded in spirit, a wife of one’s youth when she is rejected,” says your God.“ I deserted you for a brief moment, but I will take you back with abundant compassion.In a surge of anger I hid my face from you for a moment, but I will have compassion on you with everlasting love,” says the LORD your Redeemer.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

who confirms the message of his servant and fulfills the counsel of his messengers; who says to Jerusalem,“ She will be inhabited,” and to the cities of Judah,“ They will be rebuilt,” and I will restore her ruins;

You will rise up and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her— the appointed time has come.For your servants take delight in its stones and favor its dust.

Be glad for Jerusalem and rejoice over her, all who love her. Rejoice greatly with her, all who mourn over her—so that you may nurse and be satisfied from her comforting breast and drink deeply and delight yourselves from her glorious breasts.For this is what the LORD says: I will make peace flow to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flood; you will nurse and be carried on her hip and bounced on her lap.As a mother comforts her son, so I will comfort you, and you will be comforted in Jerusalem.You will see, you will rejoice, and you will flourish like grass; then the LORD’s power will be revealed to his servants, but he will show his wrath against his enemies.

I— I am the one who comforts you. Who are you that you should fear humans who die, or a son of man who is given up like grass?
