Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who gave birth to you. When I called him, he was only one; I blessed him and made him many.

look to Abraham, your father, and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I blessed him and made him many.

Consider Abraham. He is the father of your people. Think about Sarah. She is your mother. When I chose Abraham, he did not have any children. But I blessed him and gave him many of them.

Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, that I might bless him and multiply him.

Yes, think about Abraham, your ancestor, and Sarah, who gave birth to your nation. Abraham was only one man when I called him. But when I blessed him, he became a great nation.”

“ Son of man, those who live in the ruins in the land of Israel are saying,‘ Abraham was only one person, yet he received possession of the land. But we are many; surely the land has been given to us as a possession.’

Consequently, those who have faith are blessed with Abraham, who had faith.For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, because it is written, Everyone who does not do everything written in the book of the law is cursed.Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live by faith.But the law is not based on faith; instead, the one who does these things will live by them.Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, because it is written, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Abraham and Sarah were old and getting on in years. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.So she laughed to herself:“ After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I have delight?”But the LORD asked Abraham,“ Why did Sarah laugh, saying,‘ Can I really have a baby when I’m old?’

After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield; your reward will be very great.But Abram said,“ Lord GOD, what can you give me, since I am childless and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

“ The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become rich. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male and female slaves, and camels and donkeys.

Therefore, the LORD who redeemed Abraham says this about the house of Jacob: Jacob will no longer be ashamed, and his face will no longer be pale.

I will indeed bless you and make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your offspring will possess the city gates of their enemies.

Abraham was now old, getting on in years, and the LORD had blessed him in everything.

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?If Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about— but not before God.For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness.Now to the one who works, pay is not credited as a gift, but as something owed.But to the one who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited for righteousness.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and set out for a place that he was going to receive as an inheritance. He went out, even though he did not know where he was going.By faith he stayed as a foreigner in the land of promise, living in tents as did Isaac and Jacob, coheirs of the same promise.For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God.By faith even Sarah herself, when she was unable to have children, received power to conceive offspring, even though she was past the age, since she considered that the one who had promised was faithful.Therefore, from one man— in fact, from one as good as dead— came offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and as innumerable as the grains of sand along the seashore.

After Lot had separated from him, the LORD said to Abram,“ Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west,for I will give you and your offspring forever all the land that you see.I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.Get up and walk around the land, through its length and width, for I will give it to you.”

Now the word of the LORD came to him:“ This one will not be your heir; instead, one who comes from your own body will be your heir.”He took him outside and said,“ Look at the sky and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him,“ Your offspring will be that numerous.”

The LORD said to Abram: Go from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

But I took your father Abraham from the region beyond the Euphrates River, led him throughout the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants. I gave him Isaac,

This is why the promise is by faith, so that it may be according to grace, to guarantee it to all the descendants— not only to the one who is of the law but also to the one who is of Abraham’s faith. He is the father of us all.As it is written: I have made you the father of many nations— in the presence of the God in whom he believed, the one who gives life to the dead and calls things into existence that do not exist.He believed, hoping against hope, so that he became the father of many nations according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be.He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body to be already dead( since he was about a hundred years old) and also the deadness of Sarah’s womb.He did not waver in unbelief at God’s promise but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,because he was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to do.Therefore, it was credited to him for righteousness.Now it was credited to him was not written for Abraham alone,but also for us. It will be credited to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

You, the LORD, are the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and changed his name to Abraham.You found his heart faithful in your sight, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites— to give it to his descendants. You have fulfilled your promise, for you are righteous.
