These double calamities have come upon you— who can comfort you?— ruin and destruction, famine and sword— who can console you?

Nothing but trouble has come to you. You have been wiped out and destroyed. And you have suffered hunger and war. No one feels sorry for you. No one can comfort you.

These two things have happened to you— who will console you?— devastation and destruction, famine and sword; who will comfort you?

These two calamities have fallen on you: desolation and destruction, famine and war. And who is left to sympathize with you? Who is left to comfort you?

These two things have happened to you: devastation and destruction, famine and sword. Who will grieve for you? How can I comfort you?

These two things have come to you; Who will be sorry for you?— Desolation and destruction, famine and sword— By whom will I comfort you?

These two things are befallen thee, who shall bemoan thee? desolation and destruction, and the famine and the sword; how shall I comfort thee?

These double disasters confronted you. But who feels sorry for you? Destruction and devastation, famine and sword. But who consoles you?

But these two things will come on you suddenly in one day: Loss of children and widowhood. They will come on you in full measure In spite of your many sorceries, In spite of the great power of your spells.

And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,“ Lord God, please pardon! How can Jacob stand? For he is small.”

Her uncleanness was in her garment’s seams; She did not think of her future. So she has fallen in an astonishing way; She has no comforter.“ See, Lord, my affliction, For the enemy has honored himself!”

Disgrace has broken my heart, and I am so sick. And I waited for sympathy, but there was none; And for comforters, but I found none.

For these things I weep; My eyes run down with water; Because far from me is a comforter, One to restore my soul. My children are desolate Because the enemy has prevailed.”Zion stretches out with her hands; There is no one to comfort her; The Lord has commanded regarding Jacob That those around him become his adversaries; Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them.

For this is what the Lord God says:“ How much more when I send My four severe judgments against Jerusalem: sword, famine, vicious animals, and plague to eliminate human and animal life from it!

Those who are most helpless will eat, And the poor will lie down in security; I will kill your root with famine, And it will kill your survivors.

Now when Job’s three friends heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, they came, each one from his own place— Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and comfort him.

To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,

“ Is it nothing to all you who pass this way? Look and see if there is any pain like my pain Which was inflicted on me, With which the Lord tormented me on the day of His fierce anger.

This is what the Lord of armies says:“ Consider and call for the mourning women, that they may come; And send for the skillful women, that they may come!Have them hurry and take up a wailing for us, So that our eyes may shed tears, And our eyelids flow with water.For a voice of wailing is heard from Zion:‘ How devastated we are! We are put to great shame, For we have abandoned the land Because they have torn down our homes.’ ”Now hear the word of the Lord, you women, And let your ears receive the word of His mouth; Teach your daughters wailing, And have every woman teach her neighbor a song of mourning.For death has come up through our windows; It has entered our palaces To eliminate the children from the streets, The young men from the public squares.

Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold, I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and power was on the side of their oppressors, but they had no one to comfort them.

Therefore I say,“ Look away from me, Let me weep bitterly, Do not try to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.”

Because of this, we have been comforted. And besides our comfort, we rejoiced even much more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace,comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

But God, who comforts the discouraged, comforted us by the arrival of Titus;and not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted among you, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced even more.

Then all his brothers, all his sisters, and all who had known him before came to him, and they ate bread with him in his house; and they sympathized with him and comforted him for all the adversities that the Lord had brought on him. And each one gave him a piece of money, and each a ring of gold.
