迦勒底人焚燒上帝的殿，拆毀耶路撒冷的城牆，並且焚燒所有的宮殿，毀壞其中所有珍貴的器皿。沒有被殺戮的人都被擄往巴比倫，做他和他子孫的奴隸，直到波斯帝國的時代。這就應驗了耶和華藉耶利米之口所說的話：這片土地享受了安息，它在荒涼中守安息，直到滿了七十年。

卻背棄了真道，讓他們重新悔改是不可能的。因為他們等於把上帝的兒子重新釘在十字架上，使祂再度公開受辱。一塊經常受到雨水滋潤的田地若為耕種的人長出莊稼來，就蒙上帝賜福；若長出來的盡是荊棘和蒺藜，就毫無價值，它會面臨被咒詛的危險，最後必遭焚燒。

我說：「主啊，這要到什麼時候呢？」祂說：「直到城邑荒涼，無人居住，房屋空置，土地荒廢的時候。那時，我必把他們趕到遠方，他們的土地必荒蕪。

為我百姓那長滿荊棘和蒺藜的土地，為那曾經充滿歡樂的城邑和家庭哀哭吧！王宮必被遺棄，繁榮的城邑必荒蕪，山岡和瞭望塔必永遠成為野驢的樂園、羊群的草場。

以色列人也要有許多日子沒有君王和首領，沒有祭祀和神柱，也沒有以弗得和家庭神像。

有一位先知名叫以利亞，是基列的提斯比人。他對亞哈說：「我憑我事奉的以色列的上帝——永活的耶和華起誓，如果我不禱告，這幾年必沒有雨水和甘露。」

遍地將是硫磺和鹽，無法耕種，寸草不生，如同耶和華盛怒之下毀滅的所多瑪、蛾摩拉、押瑪和洗扁。

他們要死在刀劍之下，要被擄到外國去。耶路撒冷要被外族人蹂躪，直到外族人肆虐的日期滿了為止。

前來攻打耶路撒冷的列國中的倖存者，必每年上來敬拜大君王——萬軍之耶和華，並且守住棚節。地上萬族中若有人不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王——萬軍之耶和華，他們必沒有雨水。

耶和華告訴耶利米有關旱災的事：

我要告訴你，耶和華說，『我必在整個大地上拆毀我所建立的，剷除我所栽培的。

「我在收割前三個月停止降雨。我在一座城降雨，在另一座城不降雨；我使一塊田有雨水的滋潤，另一塊田因無雨而乾裂。

他們擁有權能，在傳道期間可以關閉天空使雨不降在地上，又有權使水變成血，並隨時用各樣的災禍擊打世界。

我要把你們驅散到各國，還要拔刀追殺你們。你們的土地將荒廢，城邑將淪為廢墟。你們被擄到敵國的時候，你們的土地將荒廢，享受安息。你們住在那裡的時候，沒有在安息年讓土地安息，因此土地在荒廢的日子裡將享受安息。

我親耳聽到萬軍之耶和華說：「許多富麗堂皇的房屋必荒廢，無人居住。三十畝葡萄園只產二十升酒，二百公斤種子只產二十公斤糧食。」
