迦勒底人焚烧上帝的殿，拆毁耶路撒冷的城墙，并且焚烧所有的宫殿，毁坏其中所有珍贵的器皿。没有被杀戮的人都被掳往巴比伦，做他和他子孙的奴隶，直到波斯帝国的时代。这就应验了耶和华借耶利米之口所说的话：这片土地享受了安息，它在荒凉中守安息，直到满了七十年。

却背弃了真道，让他们重新悔改是不可能的。因为他们等于把上帝的儿子重新钉在十字架上，使祂再度公开受辱。一块经常受到雨水滋润的田地若为耕种的人长出庄稼来，就蒙上帝赐福；若长出来的尽是荆棘和蒺藜，就毫无价值，它会面临被咒诅的危险，最后必遭焚烧。

我说：“主啊，这要到什么时候呢？”祂说：“直到城邑荒凉，无人居住，房屋空置，土地荒废的时候。那时，我必把他们赶到远方，他们的土地必荒芜。

为我百姓那长满荆棘和蒺藜的土地，为那曾经充满欢乐的城邑和家庭哀哭吧！王宫必被遗弃，繁荣的城邑必荒芜，山冈和瞭望塔必永远成为野驴的乐园、羊群的草场。

以色列人也要有许多日子没有君王和首领，没有祭祀和神柱，也没有以弗得和家庭神像。

有一位先知名叫以利亚，是基列的提斯比人。他对亚哈说：“我凭我事奉的以色列的上帝——永活的耶和华起誓，如果我不祷告，这几年必没有雨水和甘露。”

遍地将是硫磺和盐，无法耕种，寸草不生，如同耶和华盛怒之下毁灭的所多玛、蛾摩拉、押玛和洗扁。

他们要死在刀剑之下，要被掳到外国去。耶路撒冷要被外族人蹂躏，直到外族人肆虐的日期满了为止。

前来攻打耶路撒冷的列国中的幸存者，必每年上来敬拜大君王——万军之耶和华，并且守住棚节。地上万族中若有人不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王——万军之耶和华，他们必没有雨水。

耶和华告诉耶利米有关旱灾的事：

我要告诉你，耶和华说，‘我必在整个大地上拆毁我所建立的，铲除我所栽培的。

“我在收割前三个月停止降雨。我在一座城降雨，在另一座城不降雨；我使一块田有雨水的滋润，另一块田因无雨而干裂。

他们拥有权能，在传道期间可以关闭天空使雨不降在地上，又有权使水变成血，并随时用各样的灾祸击打世界。

我要把你们驱散到各国，还要拔刀追杀你们。你们的土地将荒废，城邑将沦为废墟。你们被掳到敌国的时候，你们的土地将荒废，享受安息。你们住在那里的时候，没有在安息年让土地安息，因此土地在荒废的日子里将享受安息。

我亲耳听到万军之耶和华说：“许多富丽堂皇的房屋必荒废，无人居住。三十亩葡萄园只产二十升酒，二百公斤种子只产二十公斤粮食。”
