But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine!“ Let us eat and drink,” you say,“ for tomorrow we die!”

Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn’t you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music of timbrels and harps?

These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm— shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted— twice dead.

They send forth their children as a flock; their little ones dance about.They sing to the music of timbrel and lyre; they make merry to the sound of the pipe.They spend their years in prosperity and go down to the grave in peace.Yet they say to God,‘ Leave us alone! We have no desire to know your ways.

“ They will eat but not have enough; they will engage in prostitution but not flourish, because they have deserted the Lord to give themselvesto prostitution; old wine and new wine take away their understanding.

to those who say,“ Let God hurry; let him hasten his work so we may see it. The plan of the Holy One of Israel— let it approach, let it come into view, so we may know it.”

Instead, you have set yourself up against the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand. But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life and all your ways.

You lie on beds adorned with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments.You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

How great are your works, Lord, how profound your thoughts!Senseless people do not know, fools do not understand,

“ There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
