我使虚谎的预兆失效，愚弄占卜的人，使智慧人退后，使他的知识变为愚拙；

因路途遥远，你就疲倦，却不说，这是枉然，以为能找到复兴之力，所以不觉疲惫。

万军之耶和华如此说：巴比伦宽阔的城墙要夷为平地，它高大的城门必被火焚烧。万民所劳碌的必致虚空，万族所劳碌的被火焚烧，他们都必困乏。

大声吩咐将巫师、迦勒底人和观兆的领进来。王对巴比伦的智慧人说：“谁能读这文字，并且向我讲解它的意思，他必身穿紫袍，项带金链，在我国中位列第三。”于是王所有的智慧人都进前来，他们却不能读那文字，也不能为王讲解它的意思。

王吩咐人将术士、巫师、行邪术的和迦勒底人召来，要他们把王的梦告诉王；他们就来，站在王面前。王对他们说：“我做了一个梦，心里烦乱，想要知道这是什么梦。”迦勒底人用亚兰话对王说：“愿王万岁！请将梦告诉仆人，我们就可以讲解。”王回答迦勒底人说：“这事我已决定，你们若不把梦和梦的解释告诉我，就必被凌迟，你们的房屋必成粪堆；但你们若能说出这个梦和梦的解释，就必从我得到礼物、赏赐和殊荣。现在，你们要把梦和梦的解释告诉我。”他们再一次回答说：“请王将梦告诉仆人，我们就可以讲解。”王回答说：“我确实知道你们是故意拖延，因为你们知道这事我已决定。你们若不将梦告诉我，只有一个办法对待你们；因为你们彼此串通，向我胡言乱语，要等候情势改变。现在，你们要将梦告诉我，让我知道你们真能为我解梦。”迦勒底人回答王说：“世上没有人能解释王的事情；从来没有君王、大臣、掌权者向术士、巫师，或迦勒底人问过这样的事。

当夜，迦勒底王伯沙撒被杀。

看哪，这不都是出于万军之耶和华吗？万民劳碌得来的被火焚烧，万族辛苦建造的，归于虚空。

现在智慧人和巫师都被带到我面前，要叫他们读这文字，为我讲解它的意思；无奈他们都不能讲解它的意思。我听说你能讲解，能解疑惑；现在你若能读这文字，为我讲解它的意思，就必身穿紫袍，项戴金链，在我国中位列第三。”

你所操劳的事都像这样；从你幼年以来与你交易的都各奔己路，没有一人来救你。

然而这一切劳碌无效，它厚厚的锈，即使用火也除不掉。
