Everyone who makes a carved image is vain. The things that they delight in will not profit. Their own witnesses don’t see, nor know, that they may be disappointed.

All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame.

Those who make statues of gods don’t amount to anything. And the statues they think so much of are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind. They don’t know anything. So they will be put to shame.

How foolish are those who manufacture idols. These prized objects are really worthless. The people who worship idols don’t know this, so they are all put to shame.

Behold, you are nothing, and your work is nothing. He who chooses you is an abomination.

Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!

For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move.They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might.Who shouldn’t fear you, King of the nations? For it belongs to you. Because among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is no one like you.But they are together brutish and foolish, instructed by idols! It is just wood.

being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts.

Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no other God but one.

Yahweh, my strength, and my stronghold, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the nations will come to you from the ends of the earth, and will say,“ Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, vanity and things in which there is no profit.Should a man make to himself gods which yet are no gods?”

They don’t know, neither do they consider: for he has shut their eyes, that they can’t see; and their hearts, that they can’t understand.

“ Assemble yourselves and come. Draw near together, you who have escaped from the nations. Those have no knowledge who carry the wood of their engraved image, and pray to a god that can’t save.

They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying,“ Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.At noon, Elijah mocked them, and said,“ Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is deep in thought, or he has gone somewhere, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.When midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening offering; but there was no voice, no answer, and nobody paid attention.Elijah said to all the people,“ Come near to me!”; and all the people came near to him. He repaired Yahweh’s altar that had been thrown down.Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom Yahweh’s word came, saying,“ Israel shall be your name.”With the stones he built an altar in Yahweh’s name. He made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two seahs of seed.He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said,“ Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the wood.”He said,“ Do it a second time;” and they did it the second time. He said,“ Do it a third time;” and they did it the third time.The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet came near, and said,“ Yahweh, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.Hear me, Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that you, Yahweh, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again.”Then Yahweh’s fire fell, and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said,“ Yahweh, he is God! Yahweh, he is God!”Elijah said to them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!” They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.

Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have destroyed all the countries and their land,and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.”

Some pour out gold from the bag, and weigh silver in the balance. They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it a god. They fall down— yes, they worship.They bear it on their shoulder. They carry it, and set it in its place, and it stands there. It cannot move from its place. Yes, one may cry to it, yet it can not answer. It cannot save him out of his trouble.

In that day, men shall cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold, which have been made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats,to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Yahweh, and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.

‘ Cursed is the man who makes an engraved or molten image, an abomination to Yahweh, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ All the people shall answer and say,‘ Amen.’

But in his place he will honor the god of fortresses. He will honor a god whom his fathers didn’t know with gold, silver, and with precious stones and pleasant things.

Bring out the blind people who have eyes, and the deaf who have ears.

who tell wood,‘ You are my father,’ and a stone,‘ You have given birth to me,’ for they have turned their back to me, and not their face; but in the time of their trouble they will say,‘ Arise, and save us!’“ But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble; for you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah.

Go and cry to the gods which you have chosen. Let them save you in the time of your distress!”

Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? Aren’t you he, Yahweh our God? Therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,

“ Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see.

“ What value does the engraved image have, that its maker has engraved it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make mute idols?Woe to him who says to the wood,‘ Awake!’ or to the mute stone,‘ Arise!’ Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all within it.But Yahweh is in his holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before him!”

He feeds on ashes. A deceived heart has turned him aside; and he can’t deliver his soul, nor say,“ Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”

Bel bows down. Nebo stoops. Their idols are carried by animals, and on the livestock. The things that you carried around are heavy loads, a burden for the weary.They stoop and they bow down together. They could not deliver the burden, but they have gone into captivity.

Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.

Has a nation changed its gods, which really are no gods? But my people have changed their glory for that which doesn’t profit.

They have set up kings, but not by me. They have made princes, and I didn’t approve. Of their silver and their gold they have made themselves idols, that they may be cut off.Let Samaria throw out his calf idol! My anger burns against them! How long will it be until they are capable of purity?For this is even from Israel! The workman made it, and it is no God; indeed, the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

but have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which don’t see, or hear, or know; and you have not glorified the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways.
