All who make idols are nothing, and what they treasure benefits no one. Their witnesses do not see or know anything, so they will be put to shame.

All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant, to their own shame.

Those who make statues of gods don’t amount to anything. And the statues they think so much of are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind. They don’t know anything. So they will be put to shame.

All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame.

How foolish are those who manufacture idols. These prized objects are really worthless. The people who worship idols don’t know this, so they are all put to shame.

Those who fashion an idol are all futile, and their treasured things are of no benefit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be put to shame.

Those who make an image, all of them are useless, And their precious things shall not profit; They are their own witnesses; They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.

They that fashion a graven image are all of them vanity; and the things that they delight in shall not profit; and their own witnesses see not, nor know: that they may be put to shame.

Look, you are nothing and your work is worthless. Anyone who chooses you is detestable.

Look, all of them are a delusion; their works are nonexistent; their images are wind and emptiness.

All who serve carved images, those who boast in worthless idols, will be put to shame. All the gods must worship him.

for the customs of the peoples are worthless. Someone cuts down a tree from the forest; it is worked by the hands of a craftsman with a chisel.He decorates it with silver and gold. It is fastened with hammer and nails, so it won’t totter.Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them for they can do no harm— and they cannot do any good.LORD, there is no one like you. You are great; your name is great in power.Who should not fear you, King of the nations? It is what you deserve. For among all the wise people of the nations and among all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.They are both stupid and foolish, instructed by worthless idols made of wood!

They are darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their hearts.

About eating food sacrificed to idols, then, we know that“ an idol is nothing in the world,” and that“ there is no God but one.”

LORD, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in a time of distress, the nations will come to you from the ends of the earth, and they will say,“ Our ancestors inherited only lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.”Can one make gods for himself? But they are not gods.

Such people do not comprehend and cannot understand, for he has shut their eyes so they cannot see, and their minds so they cannot understand.

“ Come, gather together, and approach, you fugitives of the nations. Those who carry their wooden idols and pray to a god who cannot save have no knowledge.

So they took the bull that he gave them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying,“ Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound; no one answered. Then they danced around the altar they had made.At noon Elijah mocked them. He said,“ Shout loudly, for he’s a god! Maybe he’s thinking it over; maybe he has wandered away; or maybe he’s on the road. Perhaps he’s sleeping and will wake up!”They shouted loudly, and cut themselves with knives and spears, according to their custom, until blood gushed over them.All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention.Then Elijah said to all the people,“ Come near me.” So all the people approached him. Then he repaired the LORD’s altar that had been torn down:Elijah took twelve stones— according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying,“ Israel will be your name”—and he built an altar with the stones in the name of the LORD. Then he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold about four gallons.Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood. He said,“ Fill four water pots with water and pour it on the offering to be burned and on the wood.”Then he said,“ A second time!” and they did it a second time. And then he said,“ A third time!” and they did it a third time.So the water ran all around the altar; he even filled the trench with water.At the time for offering the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah approached the altar and said,“ LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that you are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that at your word I have done all these things.Answer me, LORD! Answer me so that this people will know that you, the LORD, are God and that you have turned their hearts back.”Then the LORD’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.When all the people saw it, they fell facedown and said,“ The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!”Then Elijah ordered them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let even one of them escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Wadi Kishon and slaughtered them there.

LORD, it is true that the kings of Assyria have devastated all these countries and their lands.They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but made from wood and stone by human hands. So they have destroyed them.Now, LORD our God, save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God— you alone.

Those who pour out their bags of gold and weigh out silver on scales— they hire a goldsmith and he makes it into a god. Then they kneel and bow down to it.They lift it to their shoulder and bear it along; they set it in its place, and there it stands; it does not budge from its place. They cry out to it but it doesn’t answer; it saves no one from his trouble.

On that day people will throw their worthless idols of silver and gold, which they made to worship, to the moles and the bats.They will go into the caves of the rocks and the crevices in the cliffs, away from the terror of the LORD and from his majestic splendor, when he rises to terrify the earth.

In their case, the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

‘ The person who makes a carved idol or cast image, which is detestable to the LORD, the work of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret is cursed.’ And all the people will reply,‘ Amen!’

Instead, he will honor a god of fortresses— a god his ancestors did not know— with gold, silver, precious stones, and riches.

Bring out a people who are blind, yet have eyes, and are deaf, yet have ears.

say to a tree,“ You are my father,” and to a stone,“ You gave birth to me.” For they have turned their back to me and not their face, yet in their time of disaster they beg,“ Rise up and save us!”But where are your gods you made for yourself? Let them rise up and save you in your time of disaster if they can, for your gods are as numerous as your cities, Judah.

Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them deliver you whenever you are oppressed.”

Can any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Or can the skies alone give showers? Are you not the LORD our God? We therefore put our hope in you, for you have done all these things.

Claiming to be wise, they became fools

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light—

“ Listen, you deaf! Look, you blind, so that you may see.

What use is a carved idol after its craftsman carves it? It is only a cast image, a teacher of lies. For the one who crafts its shape trusts in it and makes worthless idols that cannot speak.Woe to him who says to wood: Wake up! or to mute stone: Come alive! Can it teach? Look! It may be plated with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.But the LORD is in his holy temple; let the whole earth be silent in his presence.

He feeds on ashes. His deceived mind has led him astray, and he cannot rescue himself, or say,“ Isn’t there a lie in my right hand?”

Bel crouches; Nebo cowers. Idols depicting them are consigned to beasts and cattle. The images you carry are loaded, as a burden for the weary animal.The gods cower; they crouch together; they are not able to rescue the burden, but they themselves go into captivity.

Those who make them are just like them, as are all who trust in them.

Has a nation ever exchanged its gods?( But they were not gods!) Yet my people have exchanged their Glory for useless idols.

They have installed kings, but not through me. They have appointed leaders, but without my approval. They make their silver and gold into idols for themselves for their own destruction.Your calf-idol is rejected, Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?For this thing is from Israel— a craftsman made it, and it is not God. The calf of Samaria will be smashed to bits!

Instead, you have exalted yourself against the Lord of the heavens. The vessels from his house were brought to you, and as you and your nobles, wives, and concubines drank wine from them, you praised the gods made of silver and gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or understand. But you have not glorified the God who holds your life-breath in his hand and who controls the whole course of your life.
