我使誑者之兆不驗、卜筮之輩顚狂、智者卻退、其聰慧變為愚拙、

卜筮之輩、設兆惑人、我使其言不驗、彼自矜巧慧、反形愚拙、我使之然。

使偽先知所言預兆無驗、使卜筮者顯為愚、使智慧人退後、使其靈巧變為愚拙、

who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools of diviners, who overthrows the learning of the wise and turns it into nonsense,

“ Some prophets are not really prophets at all. I show that their signs are fake. I make those who practice evil magic look foolish. I destroy the learning of those who think they are wise. Their knowledge does not make any sense at all.

who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish,

I expose the false prophets as liars and make fools of fortune tellers. I cause the wise to give bad advice, thus proving them to be fools.

who destroys the omens of the false prophets and makes fools of diviners; who confounds the wise and makes their knowledge foolishness;

Causing the omens of diviners to fail, Making fools of fortune tellers; Causing wise men to turn back And making their knowledge ridiculous,

Who frustrates the signs of the babblers, And drives diviners mad; Who turns wise men backward, And makes their knowledge foolishness;

that frustrateth the signs of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

who destroys the omens of the false prophets and makes fools of diviners; who confounds the wise and makes their knowledge foolishness;

who frustrates the omens of the empty talkers and humiliates the omen readers, who overturns the counsel of the wise men and makes their advice seem foolish,

who frustrates the signs of the liars, and makes diviners mad; who turns wise men backward, and makes their knowledge foolish;

The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform[ their] enterprise.He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

And[ one] told David, saying, Ahithophel[ is] among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

A sword[ is] upon the liars; and they shall dote: a sword[ is] upon her mighty men; and they shall be dismayed.

And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise[ men], her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name[ is] the LORD of hosts.

Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people,[ even] a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise[ men] shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent[ men] shall be hid.

Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from[ these things] that shall come upon thee.Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame:[ there shall] not[ be] a coal to warm at,[ nor] fire to sit before it.

Then the king’s countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers.[ And] the king spake, and said to the wise[ men] of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and[ have] a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.Then came in all the king’s wise[ men]: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.

Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diviners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak unto you, saying, Ye shall not serve the king of Babylon:For they prophesy a lie unto you, to remove you far from your land; and that I should drive you out, and ye should perish.

And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, Thus saith the LORD, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until thou have consumed them.And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramothgilead, and prosper: for the LORD shall deliver[ it] into the king’s hand.

Surely the princes of Zoan[ are] fools, the counsel of the wise counsellors of Pharaoh is become brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I[ am] the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?Where[ are] they? where[ are] thy wise[ men]? and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt,[ even they that are] the stay of the tribes thereof.The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken[ man] staggereth in his vomit.

And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days,[ was] as if a man had enquired at the oracle of God: so[ was] all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts;[ Is] wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boil was upon the magicians, and upon all the Egyptians.

And in all matters of wisdom[ and] understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians[ and] astrologers that[ were] in all his realm.

So the king died, and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king in Samaria.

And all the prophets prophesied so, saying, Go up to Ramothgilead, and prosper: for the LORD shall deliver[ it] into the hand of the king.

And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade[ him], and prevail also: go forth, and do so.Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?And Micaiah said, Behold, thou shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

And the battle increased that day: howbeit the king of Israel stayed[ himself] up in[ his] chariot against the Syrians until the even: and about the time of the sun going down he died.

And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled[ his] ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter: therefore[ there is] no king, lord, nor ruler,[ that] asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.And[ it is] a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise[ men] of Babylon.

Where[ is] the wise? where[ is] the scribe? where[ is] the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble,[ are called]:But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

The prophet which prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass,[ then] shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck, and brake it.And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah[ the prophet], after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron.For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.
