Behold, all his fellows will be disappointed; and the workmen are mere men. Let them all be gathered together. Let them stand up. They will fear. They will be put to shame together.

凡宗之者、咸生愧赧、造之之工、世人而已、任其聚會、屹立於此、必同戰慄、而慚恧焉、

豈非人乎、宜其同儔、咸生愧赧、使彼聚會、屹立於此、必令其戰慄不勝、慙恧無地。

其伴侶悉生愧怍、作像者、亦僅人而已、倘彼聚集而立、必皆恐懼、咸蒙羞恥、

People who do that will be put to shame; such craftsmen are only human beings. Let them all come together and take their stand; they will be brought down to terror and shame.

People who do that will be put to shame. Those who make statues of gods are mere human beings. Let all of them come together and state their case. They will be terrified and put to shame.

All who worship idols will be disgraced along with all these craftsmen— mere humans— who claim they can make a god. They may all stand together, but they will stand in terror and shame.

They will be disappointed, yes, confounded, all of them. Those who are makers of idols will go into confusion together.

Let all them be shamed who serve engraved images, who boast in their idols. Worship him, all you gods!

For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen.

Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits, and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the local governors, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.Then the local governors, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counselors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together to the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.Then the herald cried aloud,“ To you it is commanded, peoples, nations, and languages,that whenever you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king has set up.Whoever doesn’t fall down and worship shall be cast into the middle of a burning fiery furnace the same hour.”Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshiped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.

“ Every man has become brutish without knowledge. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

When the people of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before Yahweh’s ark. They took Dagon and set him in his place again.When they arose early on the following morning, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before Yahweh’s ark; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only Dagon’s torso was intact.Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor any who come into Dagon’s house step on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.But Yahweh’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and he destroyed them and struck them with tumors, even Ashdod and its borders.When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said,“ The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us, for his hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.”

The islands have seen, and fear. The ends of the earth tremble. They approach, and come.Everyone helps his neighbor. They say to their brothers,“ Be strong!”So the carpenter encourages the goldsmith. He who smoothes with the hammer encourages him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering,“ It is good;” and he fastens it with nails, that it might not totter.

They set him between the pillars;and Samson said to the boy who held him by the hand,“ Allow me to feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean on them.”Now the house was full of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines were there; and there were on the roof about three thousand men and women, who saw while Samson performed.Samson called to Yahweh, and said,“ Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.”Samson took hold of the two middle pillars on which the house rested and leaned on them, the one with his right hand and the other with his left.Samson said,“ Let me die with the Philistines!” He bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell on the lords, and on all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than those who he killed in his life.

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said,“ Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.You see and hear that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods that are made with hands.Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing and her majesty destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worships.”When they heard this they were filled with anger, and cried out, saying,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”The whole city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel.When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples didn’t allow him.Certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent to him and begged him not to venture into the theater.Some therefore cried one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them didn’t know why they had come together.They brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours cried out,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

They said to one another,“ Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said,“ Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”Then the men of the city said to Joash,“ Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it.”Joash said to all who stood against him,“ Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar!”Therefore on that day he named him Jerub- Baal, saying,“ Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”

Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.Elijah came near to all the people, and said,“ How long will you waver between the two sides? If Yahweh is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people didn’t say a word.Then Elijah said to the people,“ I, even I only, am left as a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men.Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.You call on the name of your god, and I will call on Yahweh’s name. The God who answers by fire, let him be God.” All the people answered,“ What you say is good.”Elijah said to the prophets of Baal,“ Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first; for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying,“ Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.At noon, Elijah mocked them, and said,“ Cry aloud; for he is a god. Either he is deep in thought, or he has gone somewhere, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them.When midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening offering; but there was no voice, no answer, and nobody paid attention.

Then they said,“ What should the trespass offering be which we shall return to him?” They said,“ Five golden tumors and five golden mice, for the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.Therefore you shall make images of your tumors and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will release his hand from you, from your gods, and from your land.

I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him who sat on the horse, and against his army.The beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who worked the signs in his sight, with which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur.The rest were killed with the sword of him who sat on the horse, the sword which came out of his mouth. All the birds were filled with their flesh.

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so the house of Israel is ashamed: they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets,who tell wood,‘ You are my father,’ and a stone,‘ You have given birth to me,’ for they have turned their back to me, and not their face; but in the time of their trouble they will say,‘ Arise, and save us!’

Elijah said to them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal! Don’t let one of them escape!” They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.

Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded that the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem be brought to him; that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them.Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of God’s house which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines, drank from them.They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.In the same hour, the fingers of a man’s hand came out and wrote near the lamp stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace. The king saw the part of the hand that wrote.Then the king’s face was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his thighs were loosened, and his knees struck one against another.
