“ Be silent before me, you islands! Let the nations renew their strength! Let them come forward and speak; let us meet together at the place of judgment.

The Lord says,“ People who live on the islands, come and stand quietly in front of me. Let the nations gain new strength in order to state their case. Let them come forward and speak. Let us go to court and find out who is right.

Listen to me in silence, O coastlands; let the peoples renew their strength; let them approach, then let them speak; let us together draw near for judgment.

“ Be silent before me, coasts and islands! And let peoples renew their strength. Let them approach; let them testify; let’s come together for the trial.

“ Be silent before Me, islands! And let peoples renew their strength. Let them approach, then let them testify; let us come together for the trial.

“ Listen to me in silence, you coastlands! Let the nations find renewed strength! Let them approach and then speak; let us come together for debate!

“ Keep silent before me, islands, and let the peoples renew their strength. Let them come near, then let them speak. Let’s meet together for judgment.

“ Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.“ Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.

But the Lord is in his holy Temple. Let all the earth be silent before him.”

Be silent before the Lord, all humanity, for he is springing into action from his holy dwelling.”

Listen to what the Lord is saying:“ Stand up and state your case against me. Let the mountains and hills be called to witness your complaints.And now, O mountains, listen to the Lord’s complaint! He has a case against his people. He will bring charges against Israel.“ O my people, what have I done to you? What have I done to make you tired of me? Answer me!

The idol makers encourage one another, saying to each other,“ Be strong!”The carver encourages the goldsmith, and the molder helps at the anvil.“ Good,” they say.“ It’s coming along fine.” Carefully they join the parts together, then fasten the thing in place so it won’t fall over.

In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to bring back the remnant of his people— those who remain in Assyria and northern Egypt; in southern Egypt, Ethiopia, and Elam; in Babylonia, Hamath, and all the distant coastlands.

Come here and listen, O nations of the earth. Let the world and everything in it hear my words.

“ Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

Hammer your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks into spears. Train even your weaklings to be warriors.Come quickly, all you nations everywhere. Gather together in the valley.” And now, O Lord, call out your warriors!

“ Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.“ Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right?Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his?All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty.

If only I knew where to find God, I would go to his court.I would lay out my case and present my arguments.Then I would listen to his reply and understand what he says to me.Would he use his great power to argue with me? No, he would give me a fair hearing.Honest people can reason with him, so I would be forever acquitted by my judge.

Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.

Come closer, and listen to this. From the beginning I have told you plainly what would happen.” And now the Sovereign Lord and his Spirit have sent me with this message.

“ If only someone would listen to me! Look, I will sign my name to my defense. Let the Almighty answer me. Let my accuser write out the charges against me.I would face the accusation proudly. I would wear it like a crown.

“ Huddle together, you nations, and be terrified. Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, but you will be crushed! Yes, prepare for battle, but you will be crushed!Call your councils of war, but they will be worthless. Develop your strategies, but they will not succeed. For God is with us!”

“ Present the case for your idols,” says the Lord.“ Let them show what they can do,” says the King of Israel.“ Let them try to tell us what happened long ago so that we may consider the evidence. Or let them tell us what the future holds, so we can know what’s going to happen.

He who gives me justice is near. Who will dare to bring charges against me now? Where are my accusers? Let them appear!

Listen to me, all you in distant lands! Pay attention, you who are far away! The Lord called me before my birth; from within the womb he called me by name.
