They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.

They have thrown the statues of the gods of those nations into the fire. And they have destroyed them. That’s because they weren’t really gods at all. They were nothing but statues made out of wood and stone. They were made by human hands.

For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.They deck it with silver and with gold. They fasten it with nails and with hammers, so that it can’t move.They are like a palm tree, of turned work, and don’t speak. They must be carried, because they can’t move. Don’t be afraid of them; for they can’t do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”There is no one like you, Yahweh. You are great, and your name is great in might.

Bel bows down. Nebo stoops. Their idols are carried by animals, and on the livestock. The things that you carried around are heavy loads, a burden for the weary.They stoop and they bow down together. They could not deliver the burden, but they have gone into captivity.

A workman has cast an image, and the goldsmith overlays it with gold, and casts silver chains for it.He who is too impoverished for such an offering chooses a tree that will not rot. He seeks a skillful workman to set up a carved image for him that will not be moved.Haven’t you known? Haven’t you heard? Haven’t you been told from the beginning? Haven’t you understood from the foundations of the earth?

Everyone who makes a carved image is vain. The things that they delight in will not profit. Their own witnesses don’t see, nor know, that they may be disappointed.Who has fashioned a god, or molds an image that is profitable for nothing?

The rest of it he makes into a god, even his engraved image. He bows down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says,“ Deliver me; for you are my god!”

The dead shall not live. The departed spirits shall not rise. Therefore you have visited and destroyed them, and caused all memory of them to perish.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.They have mouths, but they don’t speak. They have eyes, but they don’t see.They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell.They have hands, but they don’t feel. They have feet, but they don’t walk, neither do they speak through their throat.Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying,“ Yahweh will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”

They left their images there; and David and his men took them away.
