They have thrown the statues of the gods of those nations into the fire. And they have destroyed them. That’s because they weren’t really gods at all. They were nothing but statues made out of wood and stone. They were made by human hands.

Bel bows down; Nebo stoops; their idols are on beasts and livestock; these things you carry are borne as burdens on weary beasts.They stoop; they bow down together; they cannot save the burden, but themselves go into captivity.

An idol! A craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver chains.He who is too impoverished for an offering chooses wood that will not rot; he seeks out a skillful craftsman to set up an idol that will not move.Do you not know? Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying,“ The Lord will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”

And the Philistines left their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.
