他手中拿杖，又在溪中挑选了五块光滑的石子，放在袋里，就是牧人带的囊里，手里拿着甩石的机弦，迎向那非利士人。那非利士人渐渐走近大卫，拿盾牌的人在他前面。非利士人观看，见了大卫，就藐视他，因为他年轻，面色红润，容貌俊美。非利士人对大卫说：“你拿着杖到我这里来，我岂是狗吗？”非利士人就指着自己的神明诅咒大卫。

现在你与我主亚述王打赌，我给你两千匹马，看你能否派得出骑士来骑它们。

便‧哈达又派人到亚哈那里，说：“撒玛利亚的尘土若足够跟从我的军兵每人手拿一把，愿神明重重惩罚我！”

因为他说：“我所成就的事是靠我手的能力和我的智慧，因为我本有聪明。我挪移列国的地界，抢夺他们所积蓄的财宝，并且像勇士，使坐宝座的降为卑。我的手夺取列国的财宝，好像人夺取鸟窝；我得了全地，好像人拾起被弃的鸟蛋；没有振动翅膀的，没有张嘴的，也没有鸣叫的。”

耶和华啊，求你怜悯我们，怜悯我们！因为我们受尽了藐视。我们受尽了安逸人的讥诮和骄傲人的藐视。

有人靠车，有人靠马，但我们要提耶和华—我们上帝的名。他们都屈身仆倒，我们却起来，坚立不移。

他说：“他们若为求和出来，要活捉他们，若为打仗出来，也要活捉他们。”

他对他的弟兄和撒玛利亚的军兵说：“这些软弱的犹太人做什么呢？要为自己重建吗？要献祭吗？要一日完工吗？要使土堆里火烧过的石头再有用吗？”亚扪人多比雅在一旁说：“他们所修造的石墙，就是狐狸上去也必崩裂。”我们的上帝啊，求你垂听，因为我们被藐视。求你使他们的毁谤归于他们自己头上，使他们在被掳之地成为掠物。不要遮掩他们的罪孽，不要使他们的罪恶从你面前涂去，因为他们在修造的人前面惹你发怒。

他又拿了耶和华殿里与王宫府库里所有的金银和器皿，并带着人质，回撒玛利亚去了。
