大衛手裡拿著自己的木杖，從溪中挑選了五塊光滑的石頭，把它們放進囊袋——牧人用的袋子裡；然後手拿投石索，就迎向那非利士人。那非利士人也朝著大衛走來，越來越近；在他前面有一個拿盾牌的人。那非利士人觀望，看見大衛，就輕視他，因為他還是個少年，面色紅潤、容貌俊美。那非利士人對大衛說：「我是一條狗嗎？你竟然拿木杖來對付我！」於是那非利士人指著自己的神詛咒大衛。

因為亞述王說：「這是我以自己手的能力和自己的智慧所做的，因為我很聰明——我挪移了列國的地界，搶掠了他們的財寶，又像一個壯士使他們的居民臣服。我的手找到列國的財富，如同找到鳥巢；我收取全地，好像收取遺棄的鳥蛋；沒有一個扇翅膀的，沒有一個張嘴的，也沒有一個啼叫的。」

耶和華啊，求你恩待我們，求你恩待我們！因為我們實在受盡了藐視——安逸人的嘲笑和高慢人的藐視，我們實在受盡了。

有人靠戰車，有人靠馬匹，但我們卻靠耶和華我們神的名。他們都屈膝仆倒，我們卻起來，穩穩站立。
