Look, I know you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him.

埃及所有的居民就都知道我是耶和華。因為你作了以色列家蘆葦的杖。他們用手抓住你的時候，你就斷裂，傷了他們的肩頭；他們倚靠你，你就折斷、扭傷了他們的腰。

埃及人是人，並不是神；他們的馬匹是血肉，並不是靈；耶和華一伸手，那幫助人的就絆倒，那受幫助的也必仆倒，並且一同滅亡。

法老的軍隊已經從埃及出來；那些圍困耶路撒冷的迦勒底人聽見了他們的風聲，就從耶路撒冷撤退了。那時，耶和華的話臨到耶利米先知，“耶和華以色列的神這樣說：你們要對差派你們來求問我的猶大王這樣說：‘看哪！那出來幫助你們的法老的軍隊，必回到他們的埃及本地去。迦勒底人必回來，攻擊這城，佔領這城，放火燒毀這城。’

後來，亞述王發覺何細亞陰謀反叛：他曾派使者去見埃及王梭，並且不再向亞述王獻上貢物，像過去每年一樣。亞述王就拿住他，把他囚在牢裡。

耶和華說：“這些悖逆的兒女有禍了！他們實行計謀，卻不是出於我的意思，他們結盟，卻不是出於我的靈，以致罪上加罪。他們起程下埃及去，並沒有求問我，卻要在法老的保護下，作避難處，投靠在埃及的蔭庇下。因此，法老的保護必成為你們的羞恥，投靠在埃及的蔭庇下，變成你們的恥辱。他們的領袖雖然已在瑣安，他們的使臣雖然已到達哈內斯，但他們都必因那對於他們毫無利益的人民而蒙羞，那人民帶來的不是幫助或益處，而是羞恥和凌辱。”以下是論南地野獸的默示：他們把財富馱在驢駒的背上，把寶物馱在駱駝的峰上，經過艱難困苦之地，就是公獅、母獅、蝮蛇和會飛的火蛇出沒的地方，到一個對他們毫無益處的民族那裡去。埃及的幫助是徒然的，是虛幻的，因此我稱它為“坐而不動的拉哈伯”。

以色列人必因他們所仰望的古實和他們所誇耀的埃及，驚惶羞愧。到那日，這沿海的居民必說：‘看哪！我們所仰望的，就是我們為著脫離亞述王，逃往投靠的，也不過是這樣。我們又怎能逃脫呢？’”

你看，你倚賴埃及這壓傷的蘆葦做的手杖，人若是倚靠它，它必刺入他的手，把手刺傷，埃及王法老對所有倚賴他的人正是這樣。
