亞述王的使者用希伯來語大聲向城牆上的耶路撒冷人喊話，威嚇他們，使他們懼怕，以便攻取城。

他們良心喪盡，口出狂言。他們窮追圍堵，伺機把我打倒在地。他們像急於撕碎獵物的餓獅，又像蹲伏在暗處的猛獅。耶和華啊，求你起來迎頭擊倒他們，求你持刀救我脫離惡人。

亞述的將軍對他們說：「你們去告訴希西迦，偉大的亞述王說，『你憑什麼這樣自信呢？

現在我尼布甲尼撒頌讚、尊崇、敬奉天上的王，因為祂的作為公正，祂行事公平，能夠貶抑行為驕傲的人。」

於是，他站著用希伯來語大喊：「你們要聽偉大的亞述王的話。王說，『你們不要被希西迦欺騙，他不能從我手中救你們。不要聽希西迦的話去倚靠耶和華，說什麼耶和華必拯救你們，這城必不會落在亞述王手中。』不要聽希西迦的話。亞述王說，『你們要跟我講和，出來歸順我，你們就可以吃自己葡萄樹和無花果樹的果子，喝自己井裡的水。以後我會來領你們到一個地方，那裡和這裡一樣有五穀和新酒、餅和葡萄園。你們就可以存活，不至於死。希西迦說耶和華會拯救你們，不要聽信他的話。

他說，『我的臣僕都要做藩王！迦勒挪豈不是和迦基米施一樣嗎？哈馬豈不是和亞珥拔一樣嗎？撒瑪利亞豈不是和大馬士革一樣嗎？它們不是都被我征服了嗎？這些國家都在我的手中，他們雕刻的偶像不勝過耶路撒冷和撒瑪利亞的偶像嗎？我怎樣毀滅撒瑪利亞和它的偶像，也必怎樣毀滅耶路撒冷和它的偶像。』」主完成在錫安山和耶路撒冷要做的事後，必懲罰心裡狂妄、眼目高傲的亞述王。因為亞述王說：「我靠自己的力量和智慧成就了此事，因為我很聰明。我廢除列國的疆界，擄掠他們的財物，像勇士一樣征服他們的君王。

我曾說你們都是神，都是至高者的兒子，但你們要跟世人一樣死去，像人間的王侯一樣滅亡。」

看啊，亞述曾是黎巴嫩的一棵香柏樹，枝繁葉茂，遮天蔽日，高聳入雲。它在河流和深泉的滋潤下茁壯成長，溪流四圍環繞它，澆灌著林間的樹木。充足的水源使它高過田間所有的樹木，枝子長得又粗又長。空中的飛鳥都在它的枝頭上搭窩，田間的野獸都在它的樹蔭下生產，所有的大國都住在它的蔭下。它高大美麗，枝幹修長，因為樹根深入水源，連上帝園中的香柏樹也不能與它相比。松樹不能與它的枝幹相比，楓樹不能與它的枝條相比，主耶和華園中的樹木沒有一棵能與它媲美。我使它枝繁葉茂，美麗無比，以致上帝伊甸園裡的樹木都羡慕它。』「因此，主耶和華說，『因為它樹幹高大，樹梢高聳入雲，心高氣傲，

我要差來亞述王的軍隊，使他們像幼發拉底河的洪流一樣洶湧而來，淹沒一切水道，漫過河岸，

他挑戰以色列人，說：「你們為什麼列陣打仗呢？我是非利士人，你們是掃羅的僕人，你們選一個人下來跟我一比高下。如果他打得過我，將我殺了，我們就做你們的奴隸。但如果我戰勝他，把他殺了，你們就要做我們的奴隸，服侍我們。我今天向以色列軍隊罵陣，你們找一個人出來跟我比個高下吧！」掃羅和所有以色列人聽了非利士人的這些話，都嚇得驚恐不已。

他們譏諷嘲笑，言語惡毒，狂妄地以暴力相威脅。他們褻瀆上天，詆譭大地。
