You conceive chaff, you give birth to straw; your breath is a fire that consumes you.

Assyria, your plans and actions are like straw. Your anger is a fire that will destroy you.

You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you.

You Assyrians produce nothing but dry grass and stubble. Your own breath will turn to fire and consume you.

You shall conceive chaff, You shall bring forth stubble; Your breath, as fire, shall devour you.

No one sues in righteousness, and no one pleads in truth. They trust in vanity, and speak lies. They conceive mischief, and give birth to iniquity.

Behold, he travails with iniquity. Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought out falsehood.

Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to destroy fortified cities, turning them into ruinous heaps.Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like a field before its crop has grown.But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me.Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

Therefore as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust, because they have rejected the law of Yahweh of Armies, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Make an uproar, you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Listen, all you from far countries: dress for battle, and be shattered! Dress for battle, and be shattered!Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand, for God is with us.”

The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them.”

“ The Assyrian will fall by the sword, not of man; and the sword, not of mankind, shall devour him. He will flee from the sword, and his young men will become subject to forced labor.His rock will pass away by reason of terror, and his princes will be afraid of the banner,” says Yahweh, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

But the multitude of your foes will be like fine dust, and the multitude of the ruthless ones like chaff that blows away. Yes, it will be in an instant, suddenly.She will be visited by Yahweh of Armies with thunder, with earthquake, with great noise, with whirlwind and storm, and with the flame of a devouring fire.The multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all who fight against her and her stronghold, and who distress her, will be like a dream, a vision of the night.It will be like when a hungry man dreams, and behold, he eats; but he awakes, and his hunger isn’t satisfied; or like when a thirsty man dreams, and behold, he drinks; but he awakes, and behold, he is faint, and he is still thirsty. The multitude of all the nations that fight against Mount Zion will be like that.

For they have conspired together with one mind. They form an alliance against you.The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagrites;Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;Assyria also is joined with them. They have helped the children of Lot. Selah.Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon;who perished at Endor, who became as dung for the earth.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,who said,“ Let’s take possession of God’s pasture lands.”My God, make them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind.As the fire that burns the forest, as the flame that sets the mountains on fire,so pursue them with your tempest, and terrify them with your storm.Fill their faces with confusion, that they may seek your name, Yahweh.Let them be disappointed and dismayed forever. Yes, let them be confounded and perish;that they may know that you alone, whose name is Yahweh, are the Most High over all the earth.

They conceive mischief, and produce iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit.”

Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot a vain thing?

Yahweh will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the descent of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, storm, and hailstones.For through Yahweh’s voice the Assyrian will be dismayed. He will strike him with his rod.Every stroke of the rod of punishment, which Yahweh will lay on him, will be with the sound of tambourines and harps. He will fight with them in battles, brandishing weapons.For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is prepared. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. Yahweh’s breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.

However he doesn’t mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off not a few nations.For he says,“ Aren’t all of my princes kings?Isn’t Calno like Carchemish? Isn’t Hamath like Arpad? Isn’t Samaria like Damascus?”As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose engraved images exceeded those of Jerusalem and of Samaria;shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?Therefore it will happen that when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the willful proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the insolence of his arrogant looks.For he has said,“ By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding. I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures. Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers.My hand has found the riches of the peoples like a nest, and like one gathers eggs that are abandoned, I have gathered all the earth. There was no one who moved their wing, or that opened their mouth, or chirped.”

The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt away. The earth trembles at his presence, yes, the world, and all who dwell in it.Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken apart by him.Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him.But with an overflowing flood, he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.What do you plot against Yahweh? He will make a full end. Affliction won’t rise up the second time.For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drink, they are consumed utterly like dry stubble.

While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You haven’t lied to men, but to God.”

The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters: but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far off, and will be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

We have been with child. We have been in pain. We gave birth, it seems, only to wind. We have not worked any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
