You conceive chaff, you give birth to straw; your breath is a fire that consumes you.

Assyria, your plans and actions are like straw. Your anger is a fire that will destroy you.

You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you.

You Assyrians produce nothing but dry grass and stubble. Your own breath will turn to fire and consume you.

See the one who is pregnant with wickedness, who conceives destructive plans, and gives birth to harmful lies–

Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death.

Whom have you taunted and hurled insults at? At whom have you shouted and looked so arrogantly? At the Holy One of Israel!Through your messengers you taunted the sovereign master,‘ With my many chariots I climbed up the high mountains, the slopes of Lebanon. I cut down its tall cedars and its best evergreens. I invaded its most remote regions, its thickest woods.I dug wells and drank water. With the soles of my feet I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.’Certainly you must have heard! Long ago I worked it out, in ancient times I planned it, and now I am bringing it to pass. The plan is this: Fortified cities will crash into heaps of ruins.Their residents are powerless; they are terrified and ashamed. They are as short-lived as plants in the field or green vegetation. They are as short-lived as grass on the rooftops when it is scorched by the east wind.I know where you live and everything you do and how you rage against me.Because you rage against me and the uproar you create has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle between your lips, and I will lead you back the way you came.”

Therefore, as flaming fire devours straw, and dry grass disintegrates in the flames, so their root will rot, and their flower will blow away like dust. For they have rejected the law of the LORD who commands armies, they have spurned the commands of the Holy One of Israel.

You will be broken, O nations; you will be shattered! Pay attention, all you distant lands of the earth! Get ready for battle, and you will be shattered! Get ready for battle, and you will be shattered!Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted! Issue your orders, but they will not be executed! For God is with us!

The powerful will be like a thread of yarn, their deeds like a spark; both will burn together, and no one will put out the fire.

Assyria will fall by a sword, but not one human- made; a sword not made by humankind will destroy them. They will run away from this sword and their young men will be forced to do hard labor.They will surrender their stronghold because of fear; their officers will be afraid of the LORD’s battle flag.” This is what the LORD says– the one whose fire is in Zion, whose firepot is in Jerusalem.

But the horde of invaders will be like fine dust, the horde of tyrants like chaff that is blown away. It will happen suddenly, in a flash.Judgment will come from the LORD who commands armies, accompanied by thunder, earthquake, and a loud noise, by a strong gale, a windstorm, and a consuming flame of fire.It will be like a dream, a night vision. There will be a horde from all the nations that fight against Ariel, those who attack her and her stronghold and besiege her.It will be like a hungry man dreaming that he is eating, only to awaken and find that his stomach is empty. It will be like a thirsty man dreaming that he is drinking, only to awaken and find that he is still weak and his thirst unquenched. So it will be for the horde from all the nations that fight against Mount Zion.

Yes, they devise a unified strategy; they form an alliance against you.It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites,Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre.Even Assyria has allied with them, lending its strength to the descendants of Lot.( Selah)Do to them as you did to Midian– as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River!They were destroyed at Endor; their corpses were like manure on the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna,who said,“ Let’s take over the pastures of God!”O my God, make them like dead thistles, like dead weeds blown away by the wind!Like the fire that burns down the forest, or the flames that consume the mountainsides,chase them with your gale winds, and terrify them with your windstorm.Cover their faces with shame, so they might seek you, O LORD.May they be humiliated and continually terrified! May they die in shame!Then they will know that you alone are the LORD, the sovereign king over all the earth.

They conceive trouble and bring forth evil; their belly prepares deception.”

Why do the nations rebel? Why are the countries devising plots that will fail?

The LORD will give a mighty shout and intervene in power, with furious anger and flaming, destructive fire, with a driving rainstorm and hailstones.Indeed, the LORD’s shout will shatter Assyria; he will beat them with a club.Every blow from his punishing cudgel, with which the LORD will beat them, will be accompanied by music from the tambourine and harp, and he will attack them with his weapons.For the burial place is already prepared; it has been made deep and wide for the king. The firewood is piled high on it. The LORD’s breath, like a stream flowing with brimstone, will ignite it.

But he does not agree with this, his mind does not reason this way, for his goal is to destroy, and to eliminate many nations.Indeed, he says:“ Are not my officials all kings?Is not Calneh like Carchemish? Hamath like Arpad? Samaria like Damascus?I overpowered kingdoms ruled by idols, whose carved images were more impressive than Jerusalem’s or Samaria’s.As I have done to Samaria and its idols, so I will do to Jerusalem and its idols.”But when the sovereign master finishes judging Mount Zion and Jerusalem, then I will punish the king of Assyria for what he has proudly planned and for the arrogant attitude he displays.For he says:“ By my strong hand I have accomplished this, by my strategy that I devised. I invaded the territory of nations, and looted their storehouses. Like a mighty conqueror, I brought down rulers.My hand discovered the wealth of the nations, as if it were in a nest, as one gathers up abandoned eggs, I gathered up the whole earth. There was no wing flapping, or open mouth chirping.”

The mountains tremble before him, the hills convulse; the earth is laid waste before him, the world and all its inhabitants are laid waste.No one can withstand his indignation! No one can resist his fierce anger! His wrath is poured out like volcanic fire, boulders are broken up as he approaches.The LORD is good– indeed, he is a fortress in time of distress, and he protects those who seek refuge in him.But with an overwhelming flood he will make a complete end of Nineveh; he will drive his enemies into darkness.Whatever you plot against the LORD, he will completely destroy! Distress will not arise a second time.Surely they will be totally consumed like entangled thorn bushes, like the drink of drunkards, like very dry stubble.

Before it was sold, did it not belong to you? And when it was sold, was the money not at your disposal? How have you thought up this deed in your heart? You have not lied to people but to God!”

Though these people make an uproar as loud as the roaring of powerful waves, when he shouts at them, they will flee to a distant land, driven before the wind like dead weeds on the hills, or like dead thistles before a strong gale.

We were pregnant, we strained, we gave birth, as it were, to wind. We cannot produce deliverance on the earth; people to populate the world are not born.
