You conceive chaff, you give birth to straw; your breath is a fire that consumes you.

Assyria, your plans and actions are like straw. Your anger is a fire that will destroy you.

You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you.

You Assyrians produce nothing but dry grass and stubble. Your own breath will turn to fire and consume you.

For they have consulted together with one consent; Against thee do they make a covenant:The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagarenes;Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre:Assyria also is joined with them; They have helped the children of Lot.[ SelahDo thou unto them as unto Midian, As to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon;Who perished at Endor, Who became as dung for the earth.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb; Yea, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna;Who said, Let us take to ourselves in possession The habitations of God.O my God, make them like the whirling dust; As stubble before the wind.As the fire that burneth the forest, And as the flame that setteth the mountains on fire,So pursue them with thy tempest, And terrify them with thy storm.Fill their faces with confusion, That they may seek thy name, O Jehovah.Let them be put to shame and dismayed for ever; Yea, let them be confounded and perish;That they may know that thou alone, whose name is Jehovah, Art the Most High over all the earth.

They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their heart prepareth deceit.

Why do the nations rage, And the peoples meditate a vain thing?

And Jehovah will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, and tempest, and hailstones.For through the voice of Jehovah shall the Assyrian be dismayed; with his rod will he smite him.And every stroke of the appointed staff, which Jehovah shall lay upon him, shall be with the sound of tabrets and harps; and in battles with the brandishing of his arm will he fight with them.For a Topheth is prepared of old; yea, for the king it is made ready; he hath made it deep and large; the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of Jehovah, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings?Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?Wherefore it shall come to pass, that, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down them that sit on thrones:and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt; and the earth is upheaved at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him.Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that take refuge in him.But with an over- running flood he will make a full end of her place, and will pursue his enemies into darkness.What do ye devise against Jehovah? he will make a full end; affliction shall not rise up the second time.For entangled like thorns, and drunken as with their drink, they are consumed utterly as dry stubble.

While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but he shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
