Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and who depend on horses! They trust in the abundance of chariots and in the large number of horsemen. They do not look to the Holy One of Israel, and they do not seek the LORD.

彼往埃及求助、恃其車馬之眾、驍騎之強、不仰望以色列之聖者、不尋求耶和華、禍哉其人、

人往埃及、求其助己、見車馬眾多、驍騎勇猛、則以之是恃、不恃以色列族之聖主耶和華而求其眷祐、其禍必不遠矣、

下伊及求助、倚賴戰馬、因車乘眾多而恃之、馬卒甚強而賴之、不仰望以色列之聖主、不祈求主、是人也、禍哉禍哉、

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord.

How terrible it will be for those who go down to Egypt for help! How terrible for those who depend on horses! They trust in how many chariots they have. They trust in how strong their horsemen are. But they don’t look to the Holy One of Israel. They don’t ask the Lord for his help.

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, who trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or consult the Lord!

What sorrow awaits those who look to Egypt for help, trusting their horses, chariots, and charioteers and depending on the strength of human armies instead of looking to the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

Those who go down to Egypt for help are as good as dead, those who rely on war horses, and trust in Egypt’s many chariots and in their many, many horsemen. But they do not rely on the Holy One of Israel and do not seek help from the LORD.

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, and rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many, and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they don’t look to the Holy One of Israel, and they don’t seek Yahweh!

Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of the LORD our God.

However, he must not acquire many horses for himself or send the people back to Egypt to acquire many horses, for the LORD has told you,‘ You are never to go back that way again.’

You say,“ No! We will escape on horses”— therefore you will escape!— and,“ We will ride on fast horses”— but those who pursue you will be faster.

This is what the LORD says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the LORD.

For my people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves— cracked cisterns that cannot hold water.

Look, you are relying on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff that will pierce the hand of anyone who grabs it and leans on it. This is how Pharaoh king of Egypt is to all who rely on him.

For the LORD says to the house of Israel: Seek me and live!Do not seek Bethel or go to Gilgal or journey to Beer-sheba, for Gilgal will certainly go into exile, and Bethel will come to nothing.Seek the LORD and live, or he will spread like fire throughout the house of Joseph; it will consume everything with no one at Bethel to extinguish it.Those who turn justice into wormwood also throw righteousness to the ground.The one who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns darkness into dawn and darkens day into night, who summons the water of the sea and pours it out over the surface of the earth— the LORD is his name.

A king is not saved by a large army; a warrior will not be rescued by great strength.The horse is a false hope for safety; it provides no escape by its great power.

Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to your truth.

How then can you drive back a single officer among the least of my master’s servants? How can you rely on Egypt for chariots and horsemen?

The people did not turn to him who struck them; they did not seek the LORD of Armies.

However, this king revolted against him by sending his ambassadors to Egypt so they might give him horses and a large army. Will he flourish? Will the one who does such things escape? Can he break a covenant and still escape?

Woe to the rebellious children! This is the LORD’s declaration. They carry out a plan, but not mine; they make an alliance, but against my will, piling sin on top of sin.Without asking my advice they set out to go down to Egypt in order to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection and take refuge in Egypt’s shadow.But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame, and refuge in Egypt’s shadow your humiliation.For though his princes are at Zoan and his messengers reach as far as Hanes,everyone will be ashamed because of a people who can’t help. They are of no benefit, they are no help; they are good for nothing but shame and disgrace.A pronouncement concerning the animals of the Negev: Through a land of trouble and distress, of lioness and lion, of viper and flying serpent, they carry their wealth on the backs of donkeys and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people who will not help them.Egypt’s help is completely worthless; therefore, I call her: Rahab Who Just Sits.

At that time, the seer Hanani came to King Asa of Judah and said to him,“ Because you depended on the king of Aram and have not depended on the LORD your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from you.

Assyria will not save us, we will not ride on horses, and we will no longer proclaim,‘ Our gods!’ to the work of our hands. For the fatherless receives compassion in you.”

You made a reservoir between the walls for the water of the ancient pool, but you did not look to the one who made it, or consider the one who created it long ago.

On that day people will look to their Maker and will turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.They will not look to the altars they made with their hands or to the Asherahs and shrines they made with their fingers.

At their feasts they have lyre, harp, tambourine, flute, and wine. They do not perceive the LORD’s actions, and they do not see the work of his hands.

No one calls on your name, striving to take hold of you. For you have hidden your face from us and made us melt because of our iniquity.

All of them are as hot as an oven, and they consume their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls on me.

Woe to them, for they fled from me; destruction to them, for they rebelled against me! Though I want to redeem them, they speak lies against me.They do not cry to me from their hearts; rather, they wail on their beds. They slash themselves for grain and new wine; they turn away from me.I trained and strengthened their arms, but they plot evil against me.They turn, but not to what is above; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword because of their insolent tongue. They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.

Their land is full of silver and gold, and there is no limit to their treasures; their land is full of horses, and there is no limit to their chariots.

You went to the king with oil and multiplied your perfumes; you sent your envoys far away and sent them down even to Sheol.

Israel will not return to the land of Egypt and Assyria will be his king, because they refused to repent.
