They say to the seers,“ See no more visions!” and to the prophets,“ Give us no more visions of what is right! Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions.

but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”

For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.

Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, and say,“ Do not prophesy in the name of the Lord, or you will die by our hand”—

“ But you made the Nazirites drink wine, and commanded the prophets, saying,‘ You shall not prophesy.’

They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord,‘ It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say,‘ No disaster shall come upon you.’”

Have you not seen a false vision and uttered a lying divination, whenever you have said,‘ Declares the Lord,’ although I have not spoken?”Therefore thus says the Lord God:“ Because you have uttered falsehood and seen lying visions, therefore behold, I am against you, declares the Lord God.My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who give lying divinations. They shall not be in the council of my people, nor be enrolled in the register of the house of Israel, nor shall they enter the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord God.Precisely because they have misled my people, saying,‘ Peace,’ when there is no peace, and because, when the people build a wall, these prophets smear it with whitewash,

And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them,

saying,“ We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.”

who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankindby hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved— so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last!

But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.”

Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?

Then the officials said to the king,“ Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, Micaiah the son of Imlah, but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but evil.” And Jehoshaphat said,“ Let not the king say so.”Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said,“ Bring quickly Micaiah the son of Imlah.”Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting on their thrones, arrayed in their robes, at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria, and all the prophets were prophesying before them.And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made for himself horns of iron and said,“ Thus says the Lord,‘ With these you shall push the Syrians until they are destroyed.’”And all the prophets prophesied so and said,“ Go up to Ramoth-gilead and triumph; the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.”And the messenger who went to summon Micaiah said to him,“ Behold, the words of the prophets with one accord are favorable to the king. Let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably.”

“ For from the least to the greatest of them, everyone is greedy for unjust gain; and from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying,‘ Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.

Then Asa was angry with the seer and put him in the stocks in prison, for he was in a rage with him because of this. And Asa inflicted cruelties upon some of the people at the same time.

Ahab said to Elijah,“ Have you found me, O my enemy?” He answered,“ I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord.

And the Lord said,‘ These have no master; let each return to his home in peace.’”And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,“ Did I not tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?”And Micaiah said,“ Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left.And the Lord said,‘ Who will entice Ahab the king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ And one said one thing, and another said another.Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying,‘ I will entice him.’ And the Lord said to him,‘ By what means?’And he said,‘ I will go out, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ And he said,‘ You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do so.’Now therefore behold, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets. The Lord has declared disaster concerning you.”Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek and said,“ Which way did the Spirit of the Lord go from me to speak to you?”And Micaiah said,“ Behold, you shall see on that day when you go into an inner chamber to hide yourself.”And the king of Israel said,“ Seize Micaiah and take him back to Amon the governor of the city and to Joash the king’s son,and say,‘ Thus says the king, Put this fellow in prison and feed him with meager rations of bread and water until I return in peace.’”And Micaiah said,“ If you return in peace, the Lord has not spoken by me.” And he said,“ Hear, all you peoples!”

Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely.They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying,‘ Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.

The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.

and say, Thus says the Lord God: Woe to the women who sew magic bands upon all wrists, and make veils for the heads of persons of every stature, in the hunt for souls! Will you hunt down souls belonging to my people and keep your own souls alive?You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, putting to death souls who should not die and keeping alive souls who should not live, by your lying to my people, who listen to lies.“ Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against your magic bands with which you hunt the souls like birds, and I will tear them from your arms, and I will let the souls whom you hunt go free, the souls like birds.Your veils also I will tear off and deliver my people out of your hand, and they shall be no more in your hand as prey, and you shall know that I am the Lord.Because you have disheartened the righteous falsely, although I have not grieved him, and you have encouraged the wicked, that he should not turn from his evil way to save his life,

Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people,“ This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

“ Do not preach”— thus they preach—“ one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us.”

But as he was speaking, the king said to him,“ Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be struck down?” So the prophet stopped, but said,“ I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

Now why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of Anathoth who is prophesying to you?

If a man should go about and utter wind and lies, saying,“ I will preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be the preacher for this people!

How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart,who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal?Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord.Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

Yet he sent prophets among them to bring them back to the Lord. These testified against them, but they would not pay attention.Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them,“ Thus says God,‘ Why do you break the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, he has forsaken you.’”But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the Lord.

and say,‘ Thus says the king,“ Put this fellow in prison and feed him meager rations of bread and water, until I come in peace.”’”

There was another man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah.And when King Jehoiakim, with all his warriors and all the officials, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt.Then King Jehoiakim sent to Egypt certain men, Elnathan the son of Achbor and others with him,and they took Uriah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoiakim, who struck him down with the sword and dumped his dead body into the burial place of the common people.
