Woe to the rebellious children! This is the Lord’s declaration. They carry out a plan, but not Mine; they make an alliance, but against My will, piling sin on top of sin.

“ The rebellious children are as good as dead,” says the LORD,“ those who make plans without consulting me, who form alliances without consulting my Spirit, and thereby compound their sin.

Listen to me, you heavens! Pay attention to me, earth! The Lord has said,“ I raised children. I brought them up. But they have refused to obey me.

All day long I have held out my hands to welcome a stubborn nation. They lead sinful lives. They go where their evil thoughts take them.

How terrible it will be for them! They have wandered away from me. So they will be destroyed. That’s because they have refused to obey me. I long to save them. But they tell lies about me.

How terrible it will be for people who try hard to hide their plans from the Lord! They do their work in darkness. They think,“ Who sees us? Who will know?”

But they refused to obey him. They made his Holy Spirit sad. So he turned against them and became their enemy. He himself fought against them.

But you are stubborn. In your heart you are not sorry for your sins. You are storing up anger against yourself. The day of God’s anger is coming. Then his way of judging fairly will be shown.

He said,“ Son of man, I am sending you to the people of Israel. That nation has refused to obey me. They have turned against me. They and their people of long ago have been against me to this day.

But you people have stubborn hearts. You refuse to obey me. You have turned away from me. You have gone astray.

That’s because these people of Judah refuse to obey me. They are children who tell lies. They will not listen to what I want to teach them.

I long to live in your holy tent forever. There I find safety in the shadow of your wings.

“ My people will eat. But they will not have enough. They will have sex with prostitutes. But they will not have any children. That’s because they have deserted me. They have sexwith prostitutes. They drink old wine and fresh wine. Their drinking has destroyed their ability to understand.My people ask a wooden statue of a god for advice. They get answers from a stick of wood. They are as unfaithful as prostitutes. They are not faithful to their God.

I will make you very brave. So do not be afraid of them. Do not let them terrify you, even though they refuse to obey me.”

Saul died because he wasn’t faithful to the Lord. He didn’t obey the word of the Lord. He even asked for advice from a person who gets messages from people who have died.He didn’t ask the Lord for advice. So the Lord put him to death. He turned the kingdom over to David. David was the son of Jesse.

It will surround them like people who guard a field. Judah has refused to obey me,’ ” announces the Lord.

“ Son of man, you are living among people who refuse to obey me. They have eyes that can see. But they do not really see. They have ears that can hear. But they do not really hear. They refuse to obey me.“ Son of man, pack your belongings as if you were going on a long trip. Leave in the daytime. Let the people see you. Start out from where you are. Go to another place. Evil people and pretenders will go from bad to worse. They will fool others, and others will fool them.

Some people who worship those gods will hear the promise that seals the covenant I’m making. They think they can escape trouble by what they’re saying. They say,“ We’ll be safe, even though we’re stubborn and go our own way.” But they will bring trouble on the whole land.

Now they sin more and more. They use their silver to make statues of gods for themselves. The statues come from their own clever ideas. Skilled workers make all of them. The people pray to these gods. They offer human sacrifices to them. They kiss the gods that look like calves.

Whoever rests in the shadow of the Most High God will be kept safe by the Mighty One.I will say about the Lord,“ He is my place of safety. He is like a fort to me. He is my God. I trust in him.”He will certainly save you from hidden traps and from deadly sickness.He will cover you with his wings. Under the feathers of his wings you will find safety. He is faithful. He will keep you safe like a shield or a tower.

Israel, why do you want to be beaten all the time? Why do you always refuse to obey the Lord? Your head is covered with wounds. Your whole heart is weak.

Here is something you must remember. Never forget it. You made the Lord your God angry in the desert. You refused to obey him from the day you left Egypt until you arrived here.

Each official will be like a place to get out of the wind. He will be like a place to hide from storms. He’ll be like streams of water flowing in the desert. He’ll be like the shadow of a huge rock in a dry and thirsty land.

I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth. Then you will be silent. You will not be able to correct them. That’s because they always refuse to obey me.But later I will speak to you. I will open your mouth. Then you will tell them,‘ Here is what the Lord and King says.’ Those who listen will listen. And those who refuse to listen will refuse. They always refuse to obey me.

You brag,“ We have entered into a covenant with the place of the dead. We have made an agreement with the grave. When a terrible plague comes to punish us, it can’t touch us. That’s because we depend on lies to keep us safe. We hide behind what isn’t true.”

“ People of Judah, do not agree with those who say Isaiah is guilty of treason. Do not fear what they fear. Do not be afraid.

There are people who get messages from those who have died. But these people only whisper words that are barely heard. Suppose someone tells you to ask for advice from these people. Shouldn’t you ask for advice from your God instead? Why should you get advice from dead people to help those who are alive?

You will be like someone whose bed is too short to lie down on. You will be like those whose blankets are too small to wrap themselves in.

Then the Lord will create over Jerusalem a cloud of smoke by day. He will also create a glow of flaming fire at night. The cloud and fire will appear over all of Mount Zion. They will also appear over the people who gather together there. The Lord’ s glory will be like a tent over everything.

How terrible it will be for those who continue to sin and lie about it! How terrible for those who keep on doing what is evil as if they were tied to it!

“ Now here you are, you bunch of sinners! You have taken the place of your fathers. And you are making the Lord even angrier with Israel.

You have been refusing to obey the Lord as long as I’ve known you.
