These people have trained themselves to tell lies. They do wrong and are unable to repent.They do one act of violence after another, and one deceitful thing after another. They refuse to pay attention to me,” says the LORD.Therefore the LORD who rules over all says,“ I will now purify them in the fires of affliction and test them. The wickedness of my dear people has left me no choice. What else can I do?Their tongues are like deadly arrows. They are always telling lies. Friendly words for their neighbors come from their mouths. But their minds are thinking up ways to trap them.

They take bribes within you to shed blood. You engage in usury and charge interest; you extort money from your neighbors. You have forgotten me, declares the sovereign LORD.

Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,

I said,“ Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the nation of Israel! You ought to know what is just,yet you hate what is good, and love what is evil. You flay my people’s skin and rip the flesh from their bones.You devour my people’s flesh, strip off their skin, and crush their bones. You chop them up like flesh in a pot– like meat in a kettle.

Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying,“ Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.

They are determined to be experts at doing evil; government officials and judges take bribes, prominent men make demands, and they all do what is necessary to satisfy them.The best of them is like a thorn; the most godly among them are more dangerous than a row of thorn bushes. Don’t even share secrets with the one who lies in your arms!For a son thinks his father is a fool, a daughter challenges her mother, and a daughter-in-law her mother-in-law; a man’s enemies are his own servants.

Her leaders take bribes when they decide legal cases, her priests proclaim rulings for profit, and her prophets read omens for pay. Yet they claim to trust the LORD and say,“ The LORD is among us. Disaster will not overtake us!”

“ The LORD who rules over all said,‘ Exercise true judgment and show brotherhood and compassion to each other.You must not oppress the widow, the orphan, the foreigner, or the poor, nor should anyone secretly plot evil against his fellow human being.’“ But they refused to pay attention, turning away stubbornly and stopping their ears so they could not hear.

I have seen another misfortune on the earth: It is an error a ruler makes.Fools are placed in many positions of authority, while wealthy men sit in lowly positions.I have seen slaves on horseback and princes walking on foot like slaves.

Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

“‘ See how each of the princes of Israel living within you has used his authority to shed blood.They have treated father and mother with contempt within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow within you.

“ I will come to you in judgment. I will be quick to testify against those who practice divination, those who commit adultery, those who break promises, and those who exploit workers, widows, and orphans, who refuse to help the immigrant and in this way show they do not fear me,” says the LORD who rules over all.

You must stand up in the presence of the aged, honor the presence of an elder, and fear your God. I am the LORD.

The sinful nation is as good as dead, the people weighed down by evil deeds. They are offspring who do wrong, children who do wicked things. They have abandoned the LORD, and rejected the Holy One of Israel. They are alienated from him.

But you are always thinking and looking for ways to increase your wealth by dishonest means. Your eyes and your heart are set on killing some innocent person and committing fraud and oppression.

They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly,“ Prophesy! Who hit you?”

Then King David reached Bahurim. There a man from Saul’s extended family named Shimei son of Gera came out, yelling curses as he approached.He threw stones at David and all of King David’s servants, as well as all the people and the soldiers who were on his right and on his left.As he yelled curses, Shimei said,“ Leave! Leave! You man of bloodshed, you wicked man!The LORD has punished you for all the spilled blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you rule. Now the LORD has given the kingdom into the hand of your son Absalom. Disaster has overtaken you, for you are a man of bloodshed!”Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king,“ Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!”
