People will oppress each other— man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the nobody against the honored.

People will treat one another badly. They will fight against one another. They will fight against their neighbors. Young people will attack old people. Ordinary people will attack those who are more important.

And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable.

In thee have they taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken interest and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by oppression, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord Jehovah.

Then did they spit in his face and buffet him: and some smote him with the palms of their hands,

And I said, Hear, I pray you, ye heads of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel: is it not for you to know justice?ye who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the officers received him with blows of their hands.

Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge is ready for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the evil desire of his soul: thus they weave it together.The best of them is as a brier; the most upright is worse than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen, even thy visitation, is come; now shall be their perplexity.Trust ye not in a neighbor; put ye not confidence in a friend; keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.For the son dishonoreth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter- in- law against her mother- in- law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.

The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet they lean upon Jehovah, and say, Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? no evil shall come upon us.

Thus hath Jehovah of hosts spoken, saying, Execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion every man to his brother;and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart.But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error which proceedeth from the ruler:folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in a low place.I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking like servants upon the earth.

Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

Behold, the princes of Israel, every one according to his power, have been in thee to shed blood.In thee have they set light by father and mother; in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the sojourner; in thee have they wronged the fatherless and the widow.

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, saith Jehovah of hosts.

The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and they that vex Judah shall be cut off: Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.

But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, Whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.Yea, the strength of their hands, whereto should it profit me? Men in whom ripe age is perished.They are gaunt with want and famine; They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of wasteness and desolation.They pluck salt- wort by the bushes; And the roots of the broom are their food.They are driven forth from the midst of men; They cry after them as after a thief;So that they dwell in frightful valleys, In holes of the earth and of the rocks.Among the bushes they bray; Under the nettles they are gathered together.They are children of fools, yea, children of base men; They were scourged out of the land.And now I am become their song, Yea, I am a byword unto them.They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, And spare not to spit in my face.For he hath loosed his cord, and afflicted me; And they have cast off the bridle before me.Upon my right hand rise the rabble; They thrust aside my feet, And they cast up against me their ways of destruction.

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evil- doers, children that deal corruptly! they have forsaken Jehovah, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are estranged and gone backward.

But thine eyes and thy heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

And they blindfolded him, and asked him, saying, Prophesy: who is he that struck thee?
