故我將行奇事於斯民、奇之最奇、智者亡其智、聰者蔽其聰、○

故我必行異跡於民間、神妙莫測、智者窒其慧、明者塞其聰、

故我必待斯民以奇異、奇異又奇異、使其智慧者喪智慧、明哲者失明哲、○

So once more I will shock these people with many wonderful acts. I will destroy the wisdom of those who think they are so wise. I will do away with the cleverness of those who think they are so smart.”

He said,“ Go and tell this people:“‘ Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”

We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”The man answered,“ Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”To this they replied,“ You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.

For it is written:“ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? “‘ Go to this people and say,“ You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

Be stunned and amazed, blind yourselves and be sightless; be drunk, but not from wine, stagger, but not from beer.The Lord has brought over you a deep sleep: He has sealed your eyes( the prophets); he has covered your heads( the seers).

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written:“ He catches the wise in their craftiness”;

Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.
