This very day, standing in Nob, they shake their fist at Daughter Zion’s mountain– at the hill of Jerusalem.Look, the sovereign master, the LORD who commands armies, is ready to cut off the branches with terrifying power. The tallest trees will be cut down, the loftiest ones will be brought low.The thickets of the forest will be chopped down with an ax, and mighty Lebanon will fall.

For this is what the LORD has told me:“ I will wait and watch from my place, like scorching heat produced by the sunlight, like a cloud of mist in the heat of harvest.”

I invaded the territory of nations, and looted their storehouses. Like a mighty conqueror, I brought down rulers.My hand discovered the wealth of the nations, as if it were in a nest, as one gathers up abandoned eggs, I gathered up the whole earth. There was no wing flapping, or open mouth chirping.”Does an ax exalt itself over the one who wields it, or a saw magnify itself over the one who cuts with it? As if a scepter should brandish the one who raises it, or a staff should lift up what is not made of wood!

“ This is what he told me:‘ The fourth beast means that there will be a fourth kingdom on earth that will differ from all the other kingdoms. It will devour all the earth and will trample and crush it.The ten horns mean that ten kings will arise from that kingdom. Another king will arise after them, but he will be different from the earlier ones. He will humiliate three kings.He will speak words against the Most High. His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; all authorities will serve him and obey him.’

Jonah left the city and sat down east of it. He made a shelter for himself there and sat down under it in the shade to see what would happen to the city.The LORD God appointed a little plant and caused it to grow up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to rescue him from his misery. But you have been thrown out of your grave like a shoot that is thrown away. You lie among the slain, among those who have been slashed by the sword, among those headed for the stones of the pit, as if you were a mangled corpse.

Do not continue to disregard the lives of your oppressed people!Remember your covenant promises, for the dark regions of the earth are full of places where violence rules.Do not let the afflicted be turned back in shame! Let the oppressed and poor praise your name!Rise up, O God! Defend your honor! Remember how fools insult you all day long!Do not disregard what your enemies say, or the unceasing shouts of those who defy you.
