And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab is weary on the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray; but he shall not prevail.

When Moab appears at her high place, she only wears herself out; when she goes to her shrine to pray, it is to no avail.

Moab’s people go to their high place to pray. But all they do is wear themselves out. Their god Chemosh can’t help them at all.

And when Moab presents himself, when he wearies himself on the high place, when he comes to his sanctuary to pray, he will not prevail.

The people of Moab will worship at their pagan shrines, but it will do them no good. They will cry to the gods in their temples, but no one will be able to save them.

When Moab appears and tires himself out on the high place and comes to his sanctuary to pray, it will do him no good.

So it will come about when Moab presents himself, When he tires himself upon his high place And comes to his sanctuary to pray, That he will not prevail.

When the Moabites plead with all their might at their high places, and enter their temples to pray, their prayers will be ineffective!

It will happen that when Moab presents himself, when he wearies himself on the high place, and comes to his sanctuary to pray, that he will not prevail.

He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep: Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads[ shall be] baldness,[ and] every beard cut off.

And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on[ every] altar.

Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the LORD, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.

And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.

And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward Jeshimon.

And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the[ time] of the offering of the[ evening] sacrifice, that[ there was] neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer[ when] thy chastening[ was] upon them.

Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from[ these things] that shall come upon thee.

But our God[ is] in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.Their idols[ are] silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.

And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity[ with] his priests and his princes together.

Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.

Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him[ for] a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to[ their own] land.

And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel their confidence.

LORD, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, LORD, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,And have cast their gods into the fire: for they[ were] no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.Now therefore, O LORD our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou[ art] the LORD God,[ even] thou only.

They[ are] upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also[ is it] in them to do good.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost[ part] of the people.And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven oxen and seven rams.And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on[ every] altar a bullock and a ram.And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the LORD will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.

Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed;[ as] Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which[ were] in Thelasar?

Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that[ is] before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.

I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.
