于是，耶和华的天使到亚述营中杀了十八万五千人。人们清早起来，发现到处是尸体。亚述王西拿基立便拔营回国，住在尼尼微。有一天，他在庙中祭拜他的神明尼斯洛的时候，他儿子亚得米勒和沙利色用刀杀了他，然后逃往亚拉腊。他儿子以撒哈顿继位。

现在我要打碎他们套在你们颈项上的轭，松开你们身上的锁链。”

因此，主——万军之耶和华必使亚述王强健的士兵疾病缠身，使火焰吞噬他的荣耀。以色列的光必成为火焰，他们的圣者必成为烈火，一日之间烧光亚述王的荆棘和蒺藜。他茂盛的树林和肥美的田园必被彻底摧毁，犹如病人渐渐消亡。林中剩下的树木稀少，连小孩子也能数清。

耶和华必使人听见祂威严的声音，在愤怒、烈焰、暴雨、雷轰和冰雹中让人看见祂降罚的臂膀。亚述人听见耶和华的声音必心惊胆战，祂必用杖击打他们。耶和华的刑杖每责打他们一下，祂的子民必击鼓弹琴。祂必在战场上挥手击打他们。焚烧之地——陀斐特早已为亚述王预备好了，那里又宽又深，堆着许多木柴，耶和华的气必如同一股硫磺火点燃那些木柴。

那时，亚述王必屯兵挪伯，向着锡安城的山岭，向着耶路撒冷的山丘摩拳擦掌。看啊，主——万军之耶和华要以大能削去树枝。高大的树必被斩断，挺拔的大树必被砍倒，茂密的树林必被铁斧砍掉，连黎巴嫩的大树也要倒在全能的上帝面前。

因此，主——万军之耶和华说：“我锡安的子民啊，虽然亚述人像埃及人一样挥舞着棍棒毒打你们，你们不要惧怕。因为很快我就不再向你们发怒，我要向他们发怒，毁灭他们。”万军之耶和华要鞭打他们，就像在俄立磐石击杀米甸人，就像祂向海伸杖，使海水淹没埃及人。到那日，祂必除去亚述人加在你们肩头的重担和颈上的轭；那轭必因你们肥壮而折断。

耶和华折断了邪恶君主的权杖。

“亚述人必丧身刀下，但并非死于人的刀下。他们必逃避这刀，他们的青年必受奴役。他们的堡垒必因恐惧而倒塌，他们的将领一看见战旗必惊慌失措。”这是耶和华说的，祂的火在锡安，祂的火炉在耶路撒冷。

主完成在锡安山和耶路撒冷要做的事后，必惩罚心里狂妄、眼目高傲的亚述王。

你和你的军队以及与你同来的各国联军都要倒毙在以色列的山岭上，我要把你们的尸体给各种猛禽野兽作食物。

看啊，列国喧嚣，如怒海汹涌；万民骚动，如洪水滔滔。虽然万民喧嚣如汹涌的洪水，但上帝一声斥责，他们便逃往远方，像山顶上被风卷走的糠秕，又如狂风刮走的尘埃。他们晚上令人恐惧，早晨已无影无踪。这就是掳掠我们之人的下场，抢夺我们之人的报应。
