“ I will rise up against them”— this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies—“ and I will cut off from Babylon her reputation, remnant, offspring, and posterity”— this is the LORD’s declaration.

“ I will rise up against them,” declares the Lord of armies,“ and eliminate from Babylon name and survivors, offspring and descendants,” declares the Lord.

“ For I will rise up against them,” says the Lord of hosts,“ And cut off from Babylon the name and remnant, And offspring and posterity,” says the Lord.

He will strongly champion their cause. As a result he will bring peace and rest to the earth, but trouble and turmoil to the people who inhabit Babylonia.“ Destructive forces will come against the Babylonians,” says the LORD.“ They will come against the people who inhabit Babylonia, against her leaders and her men of wisdom.

Both of these will come upon you suddenly, in one day! You will lose your children and be widowed. You will be overwhelmed by these tragedies, despite your many incantations and your numerous amulets.You were complacent in your evil deeds; you thought,‘ No one sees me.’ Your self-professed wisdom and knowledge lead you astray, when you say,‘ I am unique! No one can compare to me!’Disaster will overtake you; you will not know how to charm it away. Destruction will fall on you; you will not be able to appease it. Calamity will strike you suddenly, before you recognize it.Persist in trusting your amulets and your many incantations, which you have faithfully recited since your youth! Maybe you will be successful– maybe you will scare away disaster.You are tired out from listening to so much advice. Let them take their stand– the ones who see omens in the sky, who gaze at the stars, who make monthly predictions– let them rescue you from the disaster that is about to overtake you!Look, they are like straw, which the fire burns up; they cannot rescue themselves from the heat of the flames. There are no coals to warm them, no firelight to enjoy.

Do not give her archers time to string their bows or to put on their coats of armor. Do not spare any of her young men. Completely destroy her whole army.Let them fall slain in the land of Babylonia, mortally wounded in the streets of her cities.

Look what’s coming! A charioteer, a team of horses.” When questioned, he replies,“ Babylon has fallen, fallen! All the idols of her gods lie shattered on the ground!”

Below his roots dry up, and his branches wither above.His memory perishes from the earth, he has no name in the land.He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.He has neither children nor descendants among his people, no survivor in those places he once stayed.

This is what the LORD says, your protector, the Holy One of Israel:“ For your sake I send to Babylon and make them all fugitives, turning the Babylonians’ joyful shouts into mourning songs.
